Spoilers Interesting Comments by Gates McFadden about Appearing in Picard

Based on comments Gates McFadden and LeVar Burton have made over the past year, I'm thinking there may have been plans for have LaForge and Crusher appear in Season two but things have been changed due to covid restrictions.

Hmm. She's not in the second season. But am I correct in thinking they're filming Season 3 back to back with 2? It could be she's truthfully misdirecting us. I still have faith. Once Picard finishes for good we'll have caught up with all the main cast, anything less would be just be silly. The episodes with Data, Riker and Troi were, I believe, the most popular and these guys and gals want to sell their product so....

Agreed. Picard is a huge nostalgia-fest for TNG fans, and that's A-OK by me! Not bringing back the cast would be like doing the TOS movies with just Kirk.

Or, they could just tell the story they want and not worry about nostalgia.

Yeah, I'm kidding myself aren't I. Well, it was bound to happen with new Trek.

Yes, it does appear that they are filming seasons 2 and 3 back to back, though this has not been confirmed officially. If that is the case, one would suspect that they are already in the process of writing or at least drafting season 3 so they producers would have probably already contacted actors for their availability. So, it is possible she's misdirecting us but I don't get the feeling she is. She and LeVar Burton were both open last year about producers have been in contact with them, but as Gates points out a lot has changed since. Michael Chabon is no longer the show runner, and COVID restrictions have limited the number of actors and crew that are allowed on the set at one time.

I also think that the second season is probably going to focus more on the new characters. The 'problem' with bringing back legacy characters is that you have to devote a significant amount of the episode on them and this can take away from other characters, so the writers would want to balance that out, but as you said, I expect to see everyone before the series ends.

Dr. Crusher was chronically underused on TNG and it doesn't surprise me she hasn't appeared, but given the fact by this point in time Picard and Crusher would have been friends for 50 years, it's surprising there hasn't at least been a mention of her.

It's been confirmed by John deLancie.

The show will focus on Picard and any other character is secondary. Besides, I suspect once this show is over, so are the stories of Rios et al. They're not getting their own series.

I mean, what is 'Picard' but a continuation of TNG? Sure, Stewart has (rightly) said he's only doing it because the story is worth telling but without acknowledging and including our much loved legacy characters the whole thing will, to me, feel slightly off.

TNG and Voyager.

I don't see it as a continuation of Voyager. Seven's a supplementary character, a bonus, Easter egg etc. Imagine a Kirk series (starring Shatner natch) but Bones never appears. Nor does Sulu. Or Chekhov.

There's Seven whom we see twice (or is that three times?) , plus she stays on the ship for (I imagine) a second season and there's also Icheb. The Borg are of the Voyager type and not the TNG one. Plus other things that I might discover if I went through the episodes with a fine-tooth comb.

She could be on it 50 times but the story began at the end of Nemesis and has led on from that. It was great that the story recognised Voyager and the interconnectedness inherent within the Star Trek universe (and I'd be more than happy to see DS9 characters or more Voyager characters appear) but this is a TNG story.

Q is coming too and Q was seen several times on Voyager. It would be interesting to see if Picard's Q will be more of a TNG one or a Voyager one...Well, we'll see.

We will. I must admit I'm surprised you sat and watched Picard and thought 'Finally, some answers about what happened after Voyager finished' as most people I know were more intrigued about life post TNG.

Well, it's only remotely post TNG as there are four movies in between, during which a lot has happened.

I think Q fit specifically for the "status quo" world of TNG where nothing REALLY bad ever happened to the main characters (let's face it even Picard was basically back to normal 2 episodes after Best of Both Worlds). He also fit into Voyager where his son could joke around with Icheb.

With Picard, Icheb is now dead and Seven would realistically ask why Q doesn't just resurrect his son's friend. I have no idea how Picard will handle the mood dissonance of Q's appearance when he came from a much more innocent era of the franchise.
