As much as I love Suspended Animation, I don't know why this song seems to be the one everyone likes. The whole riverdance vibe brings it down a little for me (although it's still very good).

Well, anyone who knows me around here knows that my favs are the brilliant instrumentals by Rush... They are simply sublime..

However, I also LOVE the late 50's era instrumentals by bands like the Fireballs..

Before they made it big with songs like "Sugarshack" and "Bottle of Wine," the fireballs were mostly famous for instrumental musings such as "Bulldog," "Torquay" and "Quite a Party."

I know these guys as they are from New Mexico and I used to DJ at an oldies station in Clovis, NM, where they recorded all their hits around the same time Buddy Holly recorded all of his big hits at the Norman Petty Studios. The Fireballs even played on some of Holly's recordings.

"Riverdance Vibe", that proves you are American Not realising Glasgow is in Scotland and Riverdance is an Irish form of Dance and all that...bah, just kidding

Don't forget Damage Control from that album, thats a very underrated piece of music, as far as JP's solo career goes, some of the music he composed for Necronomicon (a random pinball video game) is actually pretty good. I think the best live performance i've seen from JP was on the G3 Tour in Japan.

As for other Instrumental songs... I like my guitar music (being a guitarist and all that) but I also really dig bands like 'The Yellowjackets' (which every true Trek fan will know contributed to TVH soundtrack), check out their self titled debut album, its a very strong album, but the songs in particular that i like are,

Brian Eno -An Ending (Ascent) probably one of the most powerful and most breath takingly beautiful pieces of music ever, maybe even the most beautiful instrumental piece ever.

Its like Deep Blue Day from his album Apollo Atmospheres & Soundtracks, buy it, get your headphones ready and wait for a sleepless night.

Usually synthesisers are used in dance/trance music with vocals, the music I've posted isn't the norm, genres like Ambient and Electronic are kinda rare..

Actually, I'm Australian, not American (but since I suck at geography, close enough )
And Damage Control is actually my favourite on the album, followed closely by Wishful Thinking. They show some straight forward rock riffage and soloing, which JP does very well, unlike a lot of the other shredders.
I have the G3 Tokyo DVD of Petrucci, and personally I think he wiped the floor with Vai and Satriani, although nobody else in the venue probably thought so. Vai and Satriani looked impressive with their guitar tricks, impressing all of the 15 year old bedroom shredders, but if you listen to what they're playing, they're just making guitar noises and playing as fast as possible. Meanwhile Petrucci is playing tasteful melodic rock licks that actually fit the music they're playing.
