Instrumental songs

Add to those "Walk Don't Run" by the Ventures and "Nut Rocker" by B. Bumble and the Stingers.

These guys:
("Telstar" by The Tornados)
A classic pop instrumental written and produced by Joe Meek, England's answer to Phil Spector. He was just as brilliant and innovative in composing, arranging and producing music -- and just as batshit crazy.

Instrumental... songs.... :vulcan:

"I've been listening to this instrumental for too long now and I say what it needs is words, as any instrumental needs."

Its pretty late here in the UK, so i'm not gonna post video links, here is a few off the top of my head

'La Villa Strangiato' - Rush (Steve Morse's version is pretty good too)
The Entire 'Passion and Warfare' album - Steve Vai
'The Pump' - Jeff Beck
'Viridian' - Between the Buried and Me
'Glasgow Kiss' - John Petrucci
'Cliffs Of Dover' - Eric Johnson
'East Wes' - Eric Johnson
'Trademark' - Eric Johnson
'Manhattan- Eric Johnson
'Truth Ola' - Steve Morse
'Jump Start' - Greg Howe
'East River Drive' - Stanley Clarke
'Midnight Tango' - Al Di Meola
Anything by Casiopea (Japanese Jazz Fusion)
'Timetable' - Tony Macalpine
'Tokyo Dream' - Allan Holdsworth

^ Agreed on the Steve Morse & Eric Johnson stuff. Just about anything either of those guys did was great.

I would add any of Steve Howe's solo work, most of which is instrumental.

'Glasgow Kiss' - John Petrucci

As much as I love Suspended Animation, I don't know why this song seems to be the one everyone likes. The whole riverdance vibe brings it down a little for me (although it's still very good).
Still, it's great to see another JP fan. I considered posting something from this album, but I figured I'd already posted enough Dream Theater related stuff

I'm going to kick it old school with Santo & Johnny's 1959 hit, Sleepwalk:

Well, anyone who knows me around here knows that my favs are the brilliant instrumentals by Rush... They are simply sublime..

However, I also LOVE the late 50's era instrumentals by bands like the Fireballs..

Before they made it big with songs like "Sugarshack" and "Bottle of Wine," the fireballs were mostly famous for instrumental musings such as "Bulldog," "Torquay" and "Quite a Party."

I know these guys as they are from New Mexico and I used to DJ at an oldies station in Clovis, NM, where they recorded all their hits around the same time Buddy Holly recorded all of his big hits at the Norman Petty Studios. The Fireballs even played on some of Holly's recordings.

"Riverdance Vibe", that proves you are American  Not realising Glasgow is in Scotland and Riverdance is an Irish form of Dance and all that...bah, just kidding

Don't forget Damage Control from that album, thats a very underrated piece of music, as far as JP's solo career goes, some of the music he composed for Necronomicon (a random pinball video game) is actually pretty good. I think the best live performance i've seen from JP was on the G3 Tour in Japan.

As for other Instrumental songs... I like my guitar music (being a guitarist and all that) but I also really dig bands like 'The Yellowjackets' (which every true Trek fan will know contributed to TVH soundtrack), check out their self titled debut album, its a very strong album, but the songs in particular that i like are,

Matinee Idol
Priscilla
Rush Hour

You can't have a instrumental music thread without some synthesisers.. ;)

Boards of Canada makes interesting electronic music, this is one of their "songs" its called "Olson"

Jean-Michel Jarre's music, again electronic, this one is called Equinoxe part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v72kceqZ8W0
Part 3 is nice too

Delerium -Hypoxia Brilliant song, its almost like a science fiction story in notes.

Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois -Deep Blue Day, analog synths and a pedal steel guitar, dreamy dreamy song.

Brian Eno -An Ending (Ascent) probably one of the most powerful and most breath takingly beautiful pieces of music ever, maybe even the most beautiful instrumental piece ever.

Its like Deep Blue Day from his album Apollo Atmospheres & Soundtracks, buy it, get your headphones ready and wait for a sleepless night.

Usually synthesisers are used in dance/trance music with vocals, the music I've posted isn't the norm, genres like Ambient and Electronic are kinda rare..

^^ Ewan Dobson- Blood and Ice no synth, guitar, isntrumental and amazing quick fingers..

Actually, I'm Australian, not American (but since I suck at geography, close enough  )
And Damage Control is actually my favourite on the album, followed closely by Wishful Thinking. They show some straight forward rock riffage and soloing, which JP does very well, unlike a lot of the other shredders.
I have the G3 Tokyo DVD of Petrucci, and personally I think he wiped the floor with Vai and Satriani, although nobody else in the venue probably thought so. Vai and Satriani looked impressive with their guitar tricks, impressing all of the 15 year old bedroom shredders, but if you listen to what they're playing, they're just making guitar noises and playing as fast as possible. Meanwhile Petrucci is playing tasteful melodic rock licks that actually fit the music they're playing.

Even though I for the most part think Nightwish is just average as symphonic metal goes (give yourself a hug if you've heard of that genre), Moondance is probably one of my favorite songs ever:
