Independence Day - Resurgence

Watched it today and it was impressive visually, but lacked...probably everything that made the original work. I do want to see more of the "good" alien species though.

I really liked it! I was obsessed with the original as a child of the 90s. I spent 20 years wondering what happened afterwards... how Earth changed using the alien technology... so it was amazing to finally see that on the screen. It really elevated it above a generic alien invasion movie. I also appreciated that the invasion played out differently this time, rather than just being "more ships attack more cities".

Obviously this is not a movie to pick apart, but it really bugged me that the alien prisoners WERE IN THEIR WAR SUITS. Why in the world would you keep them in those things?! Just keep the cells filled with their atmosphere!

And yeah, even though they explained it beforehand, the alien drill just shutting off when the queen dies and the ship living is just ridiculous.

The most interesting thing to me was the introduction of a second alien race. I was hoping something like that would happen!

They can breath our air, they're just too fragile to be outside their suits for most tasks. And to be honest, the suits are bonded to them biologically, they can choose to detach, but to force that might kill them.

In the original movie the alien was knocked out, they didn't severe any of the connections to it and given a a little longer it might have healed closed again.

According to interviews, this was planned to be part 1 of 2, but they only greenlit one movie. I really hope they make enough to make the third movie, but it's looking unlikely now...

Well Deviln and Emerich should pay for the 3rd one themselves..... haha. If I were a director of their calibre I'd do that.

I don't even understand why Morrison was in this movie. Surely Dylan or Patricia Whitmore could have served in his role and made more sense given their being characters from the first one. And I agree with others who've said it would have been nice to see Adam Baldwin's Major Mitchell in place of William Fichtner's character.

He wasn't an elected politician or a military officer... I imagine his organization kinda exists outside the chain of command. Wasn't it more of a science team?

I guess...If that's what he wanted. Maybe more freedom rather than bureaucracy. But I would've pegged levinson as Secretary of Science

He is, which means he wouldn't be part of the chain of command or presidential line of succession at all.

To be fair this movie went to the artistic license of saying that a military officer was in the line of succession. In real life U.S. military officers are not part of the presidential line of succession.

I'm almost positive they said he was the Secretary of Defense.
General Adams is definitely an active service military officer, and is therefore not the Secretary of Defense. Indeed, even retired or resigned military officers are ineligible for the job for the first seven years after they leave military service.

I'm almost certain I read somewhere that in the event the entire Line of Succession being lost the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs can be sworn in as President, although Wikipedia is not backing me up at the moment. Anyone know anything on this matter?

While it is made clear in the movie that the entire Line of Succession was lost at Cheyenne Mountain, I didn't get the impression Adams was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Although on further reflection, I can't think of any specific example stating he isn't.

They combined the two movies into this movie, they were also just planning spinoffs.

Maybe, following the first invasion the Constitution was amended and general officers were placed in line of succession in the event of a follow-on ET attack. If you can buy the rest, this certainly is no stretch.

I still love that line "every 4th of July"..... Felt like them saying lets have an alien invasion every 4th of July ..

But more then that it made me think of Doctor Who and how every Christmas is time for aliens to invade Earth which is London haha.

Which hasn't happened since Moffat took over. Indeed, the only one of Moffat's Christmas specials set in the modern day is Last Christmas, but then that's set in the North Pole and turns out to be a dream anyway.

I know that was in the RTD era and one of his staples.. But just that's what the line made me think of in IDR..
