Independence Day - Resurgence

I think everyone is forgetting that it was supposed to be two movies, when it was planned it was Independence Day 4Ever Part 1 and 2.

Saw it. Enjoyed the heck out of it.

Nice nods:
Russell included in the memorial

Robert Loggia (may he rest in peace)

"I need to get you to sick bay."

I found the young cast to be really over shadowed by the returning stars. That is something The Force Awakens did better.

Loved that Brent Spiner really had a big role in this, but I too, missed Adam Baldwin.

The only thing I found annoying is how fast Julius and the kids got to Nevada. Just didn't work for me, logistically.

What I though was funny is that now, Brent and Judd didn't need as much aging makeup. They are now at the actual age that their characters were supposed to be 20 years ago. Lol.

Flawed, but enjoyable. Truth be told, nothing Devlin and Emmerich do is particularly original, and if you're familiar with their work you'll recognize all their tropes throughout this movie. That said, they at times really don't know when to end a movie, like in the 1998 Godzilla where Godzilla is defeated, then they have to fight the baby Godzillas, then once they're taken care of Godzilla returns and has to be defeated again. This movie had a similar problem, we've destroyed the alien Queen's ship, on no, Queen has a personal shield, let's destroy the shield, oh, now the Queen has all the fighters swarming around her. And now, after a fight that really should have ended fifteen minutes earlier, the Queen is finally defeated.

Okay, so, why isn't a computer virus even considered this time? If a 1990s computer virus was enough to cripple the aliens last time, a 2016 computer virus augmented with their own technology should basically own them like little bitches. Yet not once is this tried.

While I get that they were mostly focused on introducing new characters to continue the franchise on, it would have been nice to if not include these characters from the first, at least mention why they're not around anymore. In particular, Connie, Levinson's ex-wife in the first one is nowhere in the movie or even mentioned. I guess we can conclude that despite rekindling their romance at the end of the first they never go back together given Levinson now has a new love interest and there's history between them (well, it has been twenty years). Major Mitchell (Adam Baldwin) I thought would have been the natural choice to be the general in command of the space forces, though I wonder if Baldwin's commitments to The Last Ship made that undoable. Still would have been nice to have a mention, though.

So in light of cities which were destroyed last time being rebuilt exactly the same as they were before the attacks, only to get destroyed again this time, a though occurs. Australia is basically untouched by the aliens, isn't it? At the end of the first one, we see Sydney undamaged, and indeed an intact Opera House was featured quite prominently. And given the harvester was no were near that part of the world, that country has survived two alien invasions with no damage. Shouldn't that make them more influential in global politics?

Finally, a bit of a nitpick. I'm intentionally avoiding most nitpicks, since this kind of popcorn fluff is bound to be loaded with too many, but one I can't let slide is the fact that apparently the world is okay because the drill shut down even though it was only a minute away from reaching the core. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure in that situation, we're pretty much screwed anyway.

^ About Connie:

Independence Day: Crucible says that she died in a car accident sometime after the events of ID4.

I found the young cast to be really over shadowed by the returning stars. That is something The Force Awakens did better.

The young cast brought nothing to the movie. I was shocked to see Liam Hemsworth with top billing. If Dylan hadn't been Hiller's stepson and if Patricia hadn't been the ex-President's daughter, they would be blank slates. That stuffy suit who turns into a war machine at the end was the most unnecessary character. Probably 75% of his dialogue was jokes, most of them fell flat.

Crap, just remembered I forgot to mention one I found really odd. The death of Dr. Okun's friend seems a really odd scene. It is the death scene of a prominent character, so presumably it's supposed to be dramatic and meaningful, and indeed, the loss of his friend seems to spur Okun into action and he goes berserk killing the aliens. And yet, I can't help but notice, the scene also seems to be trying to be comedic, particularly with Brent Spiner seeming to be intentionally hamming it up. Really strangely done scene which just left me scratching my head in confusion as I tried to figure out exactly what am I supposed to be feeling.

The first two major deaths didn't register anything for me. I know I was supposed to care about how the first death affected the surviving character, but there was really nothing to either of them and no on-screen connection between the two. The second death was quickly brushed aside with no one blinking twice because they quickly moved on to the replacement who was also one-dimensional.

I also wonder how much the awful music score played in how I felt about the movie.

I don't are about the reviews, I really liked it. Obviously it could never be as good as the first one, which was the best film of all time. They realised they couldn't, there were homages to it, they knew that nobody but Will Smith can knock out an alien, so they didn't try. They knew nobody but Bill Pulman can do the speech.

They did have one of the new guys punch an alien, though. And they certainly tried to bring back the speech, too - but it wasn't Bill specifically who made that possible, it was that specific moment in time in the first movie.

I did love the President's line to the aliens in "there will be NO PEACE" that was a nice nod to the first movie...... She was ballsy.

Sure he tried to punch the alien. And failed. Cause he ain't will smith.

And that's the point.

As for Whitmore's speech, again that's the point. He'll never be able to redo that speech, it was unique. But people will expect him to, and he still has that conviction.

Happy Fourth of July.

Wasn't impressed. Really lacked the heart of the original. Oh well. It wasn't bad? It just wasn't good either. It was fairly meh.

I do have significant problems with the size of that harvester ship... I mean by gods, even once its left, its interaction with the planet would surely have altered our orbit and gravity by virtue of it being so damned huge.

I was so bored half way through I insisted to my partner we leave and get Burger King. A load of shite and a big let down.

I was not impressed. I'm not saying that I'll never watch "INDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE AGAIN". Chances are I'll probably watch it on cable or rent it from Netflix. But I was not impressed.

I'm aware that Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich's films are not the epitome of Hollywood filmmaking. But they have done better movies than this. I can recall stumbling across an article in which Emmerich stated that he was usually not that comfortable with doing sequels. I think his attitude had an impact on his direction.

I was annoyed that the movie never mentioned David Levinson's ex, Connie Levinson. Someone stated that we should assume that their rekindled romance didn't work. Maybe. Or perhaps she died. Who knows? The problem is that the script failed to mention what happened to her. Come to think of it, the screenplay's treatment of other female characters of a certain age really turned me off. And I'm still pissed about it.

I think Liam Hemsworth has taken a step backward in regard to his career. Gale Hawthorne may not have been the leading male character for "THE HUNGER GAMES" movies, but the role was ten times more interesting and complex than the Jake Morrison role from this film . . . and more worthy of his acting skills.

I didn't realize that "INDEPENDENCE DAY 2" is already considered a bomb. Is it because it didn't top the box office charts? I've seen movies that were a lot worse than this end up as #1. "IDR" had the bad luck to go up against a kiddie film - "FINDING DORY". I still recall that 2006's "CASINO ROYALE" never made it to the top of the box office, due to "HAPPY FEET", yet it ended up being a major hit anyway. As far as "IDR" is concerned, it still has enough time to make money - if not here in the U.S., it still can elsewhere.

By the way, I never liked Whitmore's speeches. I didn't like his speech in this film and I really disliked his speech in the 1996 movie.

CASINO ROYALE opened with Happy Feet, and opened right behind it. Both of those moves made about the same amount of money as ID4-2... and they opened in November. Also they barely dropped in their second week, and I doubt ID4-2 will be able to say the same thing. ID4-2 also lost to a movie that came out the week before and Dory made almost twice as much, and in it's second week.

CASINO ROYALE made 600 million dollars, I'd be amazed if ID2-4 makes half that amount.

People who read the prequel.

The problem is that the script failed to mention what happened to her. Come to think of it, the screenplay's treatment of other female characters of a certain age really turned me off. And I'm still pissed about it.

The new adult characters they introduced were
* Lanford (the president, who wasn't exactly great)
* Umbuntu (the Warlord, who was quite good)
* David's love interest, who didn't get much to do
* The new General - who would have been better as Adam Baldwin
* The secret service agent guarding Whitmore
* The accountant chap
* The moon base commander

Not a lot of time spent on any of them, I think the general fell a bit flat - similar to marks, but with a more important role.

That extra 25 minutes in the first film probably helped to flesh out the characters. Connie should have been president - add some grief for David when she got killed and some antaganism when they disagreed over Wall-E.

I liked the accountant though.
