So why did Mae Whitman, who is a talented and fairly popular actress now, get replaced with some bimbo?
The general answer is not the right kind of "hot."
And I guess you can take the point of view that Hollywood is to blame, or that audiences vote with their pocketbooks what they want to see and Hollywood simply responds to that. Regardless of what's right and fair or what's politically correct, the reality is often different than the ideal.

Now not to defend Hollywood (it's a cutthroat industry with no regard to accountability or decent human behaviour) but isn't that "not hot enough" pure conjecture?
All i could find is people talking about the reasons and bringing this up without anyone associated with the movie confirming it (as if they would but sometimes people's tongues slip so there may have been that).
Another reason is that she has made a name recently with some good performances apparently which automatically raises her asking salary and which may have been too much for the producers so they took an unknown actress who will be cheaper.
That's at least a common reason because i've seen a recent picture of Mae and she is very attractive (at least to me).
However this being Hollywood we will never know the real reason.
That is agravating if she wanted to come back and they didn't ask her before recasting. I would like to think there would be more to it than just looks, but sadly I'd probably be wrong. She was not on the list, and she did not decline the part. She very subtly retweeted her criticism of being replaced.
I'd source it for you, but after having gone through the research effort myself before posting about it, I think you could too. Google is your friend.
It very much sounds like they believe the other actress is a better fit for Liam. That sort of diplomacy avoids saying embarrassing things.Maybe the producers didn't think she'd be good looking enough to be with Liam Hemsworth character.

I love it that the entire cast is back. A pity Will Smith isn't.
I also like the set design, and the idea of a moon base a lot. My expectations are up.
According to Cinemablend, Emmerich was ready with the answer: He said that although Smith was initially eager to come back as fighter pilot Steven Hiller, the actor began to have second thoughts about the movie's proposed father-son relationship with Hiller's son Dylan (Jessie Usher):
"In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out."
Adam Baldwin is starring in The Last Ship. so maybe that got in the way of appearing in this sequel.
I don't know if that's true or not but Will Smith not coming back had to be a blow. I wonder if he would've signed if they had brought Jayden on as the son?
it reminds me Macross/ RobotechFox just showed the Independence Day 2 Trailer during their Football coverage. That really shocked me because I thought it was going to premiere with Star Wars. It looks interesting, to say the least.
