In Your Mind, Did Kirk and Spock Meet Before?

This sort of attitude makes me nauseous. Unlike most of the later series, Star Trek was so much more than the words on the page.

Aw, bullshit. TOS already established the proud tradition of a writer taking the words of a preceding episode and playing fast and loose with them to create a further, enjoyable bit of drama. Just remember the miraculous resurrection of Spock's parents...

Clinging on to fan conceptions held since the late sixties is among the more obnoxious ways of knitting a creative straitjacket. If we were to "accept the spirit" of old material without critique, we would still be thinking that Spock was the first Vulcan in Starfleet or some such nonsense.

No way. The whole world knows "beam me up, Scotty." Only the initiated know of Pike.

That may have been true before Futurama. For today's audiences, the one-beep-two-beeps thing really is as good a catchphrase as "beam me up, Scotty".

I don't think the "general audience" watched Futurama or got the connection, while people who have never seen a single episode of Trek do know "Beam me up, Scotty". Hell, even my mom knows it and she neither speaks English nor has she seen a full ep of Trek. So there. My mom proves it! :)

The implication is pretty strong. When asked if he'd ever met Pike, Kirk says that he met him when he was promoted to Fleet Captain. If they'd served together surely Kirk would have said "I met him when he was promoted and served as his first officer for [X Amount of Time]."
But perhaps it goes the other way around - perhaps Kirk last met his good friend Pike when the latter was promoted?

If that were the case I would have expected him to say, "I last saw him...." Sorry, I'm not buying it at all. The dialog in The Menagerie is pretty clear on the subject, in my opinion.

Well, my dad recognizes Pike at a glance, and he's only ever watched Star Trek casually (and this was before I dragged him to the theatrical showing of "The Menagerie" remastered). I doubt that most people who have never seen Star Trek would recognize Pike on the street, but I think many people who have seen that episode, ever, probably remember who the guy is. He seems to have that effect on people. :p
