Anyone ever see the movie "Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day"? It's great, and quite similar to this episode. It's a frothy, fun, romantic caper about a governess (Frances McDormand) who gets pulled into the madcap world of a glamorous singer (Amy Adams) and her many love interests -- in London in 1939, with these ominous portents of impending war all around them.
If you love this episode, you'd also love this movie. It has the same extremely deft control of tone, you keep thinking it has to go off the rails at some point, but it never does. The silliness and the gathering darkness are held in perfect balance. It's an impressive achievement, and probably my favorite fairly-obscure movie to recommend to people.
