I felt that the impact on Trek was positive. Yes it was flawed, but you can find flaws with every series of Trek, even the much beloved TNG. I wish it had gone longer, I think if it had been allowed the seven seasons that Berman and Co promised the cast at the beginning, I think a lot more could have been done with the series. My biggest complaint is the pile of crap that is TATV. A better series finale would have I think made people feel more positively about the show, IMO.
Not only a better finale, but having two more episodes to reach the magic 100 might have colored the series a little more positively as well. It was the first TREK series in almost forty years to fail to reach 100 episodes or beyond. Couple that with the overall shittiness of "TATV" and almost universally bad reception it got and it didn't help the show's postmortem image
Agreed. I didn't realize it never reached 100 episodes (I didn't pay that much attention to the # of episodes). Did TOS reach 100 episodes? I don't think it did....but then TOS will always have the magic of it being the first, even though quite a few of the episodes were pretty bad in their own right, IMO.
For me, the biggest contribution it made was in developing species that we were already very familiar with from VOY, DS9 and Next Generation, and fleshed out how these races came to be and act the way they did. (i'm refering mainly to the vulcan storyarc in season 4 and to a lesser extent to the klingon and andorian arcs of season 4) Plus, I loved seeing starfleet's origins back when it was still "Earth Starfleet"
I would say that it had a positive impact on the franchise simply due to the Andorian/Vulcan arc. Other than that though it was entertaining but didnt push the franchise too much. Rather than focus on the temporal cold war, they should have placed added emphasis on the Andorian/Vulcan arc and perhaps even tied that in with the Romulan war. Instead of making the Xindi Arc as they did they could have made that the Romula War with the Andorians Vulcans and Humans working together to solve the problem.

All UPN needed to do was greenlight one extra episode apiece during the third and fourth seasons. That would have gotten the show to 100. Just two extra episodes was all.

Insurrection and the movie 'Trekkies' hurt the franchise a lot.
Think about it. FC was a big worldwide hit with the general public. Trek was big news. Voyager even got a lot of mainstream publicity when Seven came on board.
People went to INS expecting another FC. They came out thinking 'That was it?' (Even I, a huge Trekkie, came out feeling underwhelmed). Ever since the disappointment of INS, Trek has gone down in the public's estimation.
'Trekkies' dealt a huge blow, as well.

I loved the series and I believe it was positive for the franchise.
Prequels must be very difficult to make interesting, because we all know what happened next. So the "how" must be very well done and I believe Enterprise was quite successful in that, even though it could have been better in some occasions.

Well I'd say it had a positive influence because it brought me back to watching Trek once DS9 went off the air. I couldn't get into VOY, so I had a wee bit of a break and then I had ENT. It's second season nearly lost me, but "The Expanse" and The Xindi arc made me a die hard fan. IMHO, there was some great storytelling and acting on this show... So positive for me... And Trek isn't dead... not with a feature coming out...
And UPN and Les Moonves didn't help matters by wanting to up-end the dying network's image to make it "hipper." Which all turned out to be one giant anticlimactic fizzle thanks to the network going belly-up barely one year later.
