In Conversation: The First Crew

For those who don't know, Disc 1 of the season 2 Blu-ray set includes a great sort of 90 minute reunion/conversation with Brannon Braga and the entire cast. About 30 minutes into the conversation, there's a surprise when Jeffrey Combs joins the group (though regrettably, Connor Trinneer has to leave about the same time).

It's really interesting to watch. Special features like this are why I still appreciate DVD's and Blu-rays (you won't find this on Netflix). If you can buy the Blu-ray set or get it from a video store or library, I recommend it. Braga's always been refreshingly candid about the show, and the cast follows suit.

-Everyone repeatedly heaps praise on Scott Bakula and how he conducted himself on the show, to the point when Bakula is clearly a bit embarrassed and uncomfortable.

-Braga talks about how season 4 "is what season 1 should've been" (thought to be fair, there's a number of season 1 episodes I really like).

-Braga mentions that he and Rick Berman were resistant to even making a new series to begin with, but the studio basically said if they refused, they would simply make the show with someone else. He also talks about the idea of setting the series on Earth for all or at least some of the first season, building the ship and putting the crew together, which the studio was too nervous to sign off on. I'd heard about this before, and while a whole season might've been much (maybe half to a third), Braga does make it sound interesting.

-Braga hated the Risa episode (though I've mentioned before, I wish they'd followed up with the woman Archer met in that episode).

-John Billingsley didn't like the original series episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield". He thought the story beats you over the head with its message. Conversely, everyone really liked the episode "Cogenitor", with Dominic Keating saying it was their best episode.

-Partway through season 2, Bakula had approached the producers, feeling that standalone episodes weren't really working. They felt the same way, and this led to some of the story arc (like Archer being wanted by the Klingons) and also, along with 9/11, led to the Xindi arc.

-One of the actors (Dominic Keating, I think) complained a bit about the episodes where he had to wear prosthetics, at which Jeffrey Combs said "poor baby", making everyone (including me) laugh. :rommie:

Did anyone else watch this?

I have not seen the extras on the BLU-RAYs but I have seen the 3 videos on youtube.

You mentioned a couple things that were not on the youtube videos.

I wish they would put the extras on Netflix :D

Yeah I recently watched the cast reunion, along with some other newer documentaries from the show and I am actually surprised just how 'jaded' Braga seems to feel about Enterprise, but on the whole this cast reunion extra was pretty decent and I enjoyed the hour and a half of the cast just talking about their experiences, some were noticeably more involved than the others and I think I heard Travis's voice more in that extra than his entire 4 season stint on the show.

I think this extra was where I heard that Enterprise was not even shown all over America and I never even realised this happened.

I also liked the 'explanation' over that final episode in that they saw the prior episode as Enterprise's finale.

Also was the fact that the network were imposing the singular episode format so god only knows just how they got season 3 and 4 past the producers.

UPN only had about 60-80% of the household coverage that DSN and TNG had.

Here's #2:

I can't seem to play #3 (final clip) but here is a long nice conversation between Berman & Braga discussing Enterprise.

I wouldn't say jaded but he was probably a bit frustrated about things he would've done differently in retrospect or wanted to do at the time, but couldn't. Actually, hearing him speak so candidly in the interviews (I've seen the Youtube vids before also) increased my respect for him.

I'd actually really love to just talk with him about the show for a bit.

I only used that word because his body language always seems down when he talks about the show almost as if he let the fans or the show down somewhat, though it is nice to hear him speak honestly about the show.

I may have to get season two just for the reunion disk! I have seasons 3 and 4 and the behind the scenes stuff is really fun. Seriously, does anyone have anything BAD to say about Scott? The man is awesome . For whatever people may say about Archer as a character , or how Scott portrayed him at times, it's pretty apparent that Scott was a great leader for this cast.

On another note, it was quite comical watching Demons and Terra Prime, in which the commentators were Connor and Dominic . It was pretty obvious that they probably had not seen those episodes since they aired! Or maybe since they were filmed. They had no clue what they were talking about at times . And they would get sidetracked with personal stories . It was fun though.

I've never heard anything bad about Bakula.

Although, at first, I was sorry that more actors didn't record commentaries for the DVD's and blu-rays, but having listened to most of them, actors are, frankly, the LEAST knowledgeable people for something like that. That's not to say there aren't some fun moments or that you can't learn some things. The commentary that John Billingsley and his wife recorded for "Regeneration" is pretty funny and on the commentary for "Similitude", Connor Trinneer talked about how emotional he was shooting the scene after losing baby Elizabeth in "Terra Prime" because he'd just found out his wife was pregnant with their first child.

Overall, though, people like the writers, producers, directors, and technical people like the Okudas are a better choice. They get more into the minutiae that I think a lot of fans like.

Actually, there's one commentary track that was missed for the DVD's and blu-rays. It was a commentary for "Judgment" that writer David Goodman and the then-editor of StarTrek.com recorded back in the day.

You can download the audio track from Trek Core and just play it along with the episode:

Edited to add: There's also a commentary track for download there that Goodman recorded for "North Star", but he also recorded a new commentary for the episode on the season 3 Blu-ray with Chris Black, so the older one might have a lot of redundant info, if you'd heard the Blu-ray one. Basically, the producers weren't sure the Xindi arc would last the whole season, so they wanted some unrelated, standalone episodes.

The more I hear, the less I'm inclined to bash on B&B. They are no saints, but having UPN and Paramount shortening the leash didn't help.

Why wouldn't they consider story arcs? Sitcoms were the only shows doing standalone episodes by that time.

Yeah Braga does admit to his fair share of mistakes made, with the stand alone episodes, this was they way trek had always been done (well apart from season and mid-season finale's), I guess given other stuff I have heard, the network simply were not prepared to take 'risks' with the new show.

There's a commentary on "Twilight" by Mike Sussman and Tim Gaskill in the Alternate Realities collection. It was pretty forgettable, though.

I agree that actors usually make the worst commentaries, probably because they only really know their own parts and don't really have an overview of the story or the production.
