Improved vfx and models for S2

It's a science fiction tv show and adding nebulas and the like is a conceit to make things more interesting visually for the viewer. If you're willing to accept that starships can make sounds in a vacuum but get pissy over space being visually dynamic in a fictional tv show, you need to take a step back and have a think.
You're misrepresenting what I'm saying. Notice I used the word "Always".

I don't have a problem with them adding nebulas and colors ect. In fact I'm in favor of it. I just don't think every space shot should be that way. I think they're overdoing it.

It would be more visually dynamic if they had some of the types of shots I'm advocating mixed in.

Almost every exterior shot in Discovery had some kind of purple or pink or whatever psychedelic colored nebula filling the entire screen, with an over-exposed blurry ship in front of it. It's their stylistic choice, but if you ask me, I think it's ugly.

A lot of the exterior shots of Discovery in Season 1 had blue nebulae, lens flares and just an overabundance of blue overall.

VOMIT.

They don't have bumpy forehead aliens that speak english either. What's your point?

My point is it directly refutes the idea that you need to have busy space full of garish glowing lights to keep people interested. The in solar system space shots to date have been hyper-realistic - not stylized at all.

Interstellar also. The realistic space visuals are some of the highlights of the film. (They also have the stylized visuals in the wormhole)

I have to admit i only made it through 3 episodes of the expanse before i switched off but i understand they go for a sense of realism across the board. Personally the space sequences didn't really stand out for me.

I think after 750+ hours of trek where we constantly saw reused effects footage, the same establishing shots, ships orbiting the same planets, it's nice to have space look visually different and stunning

Personally I think STD could benefit from an added sense of realism. Obviously Star Trek is fiction/fantasy and it shouldn't be hardcore realistic, but I feel modern Trek needs to be a bit more grounded at times. The visuals are part of that. The fake looking space shots of Discovery aren't particularly well done IMO.

Very much this. I've seen plenty of Trek ships doing a flyby against a nondescript starfield. One of my favourite things about Discovery's look is that they mixed that up. The effects remind me of the opening credits of Voyager which put the ship against loads of cool backgrounds. Much more interesting to me than the shots against starfields that littered the actual series.

To add to your point think it helps to immerse the viewer into the story more. There is actually a good example of this in Voyager. When they arrived at Borg space it was filled with these ominous looking dust clouds. The dust clouds/nebula helped add to the atmosphere of the episode by making borg space look intimidating, if that makes sense. Personally. I think if the delta quadrant had been depicted as weird and wonderfully as it had been in Voyagers main titles, the show would have been much more interesting.

The continually reused footage of previous treks was really distracting and tended to throw me out of the story. It was always annoying to see the city from 'Angel One' throughout the delta quadrant.

One could argue that worked because it was different. Would it have made much of an impact if every episode was like that?

Um sweetie, this isn't the 90s anymore. That's boring.

True, more intellectual television is banned as being boring. Wish the actual show quality would improve. Maybe they'll get "AI" to do the scripts. Why not, fanservice is tantamount to cut'n'pasting lazily anyway... it's sad when I'd rather watch preachy TNG season 6 and that's no easy (nor fun) task...

You can't just have normal establishing shots of the ships against black space. There's gotta be other things going on to hold peoples' attention for more than 3 seconds or else they might turn the show off!

They do? Who trained these viewers, Pavlov's grandkid? :D

those images were taken out the window of the ISS and are not "processed in order to get them to look like that"

This one's easy: Go to the apple or android app store, find and download the "ISS HD Live" camera viewer app, then launch it. You will find plenty of views that don't show what's tantamount to a gigantic unicorn farting outside the station, it is pitch black. even the ISS shots were using equipment that had a wider gamut and were processed into something we could tangibly perceive.

They were on hormonal space rabbits breeding ground.
It is known they like a bit of colour in their space to get in the mood. :p
