I'm Watching the Series for the First Time...

^Good points. I should probably reserve judgment until I've seen the series in its entirety. I'm only half-way there!

Right now, I only raise the possibility that forever being trapped in the delta quadrant is a hindrance to the show. I arrive at this tentative conclusion because we, as audience, know that every time an episode centers around the possibility of getting home, the possibility is doomed to failure.

The hope-and-disappointment pattern that annoyed me in the first season(s) becomes less frequent in subsequent seasons.

And for the record, scottydog, it's really nice to hear the point of view of such as you, a seasoned trekker with a fresh eye and open mind about Voyager - critical distance and no prejudices beforehand.

I couldn't believe it in season 5 when Janeway discovered that Tuvok was in that secret Vulcan order, and he tried to kill her, but Kes ate his brain. But what really surprised me was in season 6 when Harry Kim took over as Security and got really belligerent and married Seska after they stole Voyager, but afterwards Janeway let Seska rejoin the crew - oh, sorry, I wasn't supposed to mention all this was I. It's all good, up until they paint Voyager that glitter pink color. Was Okuda high?

I loved the Glitter pink colour that they painted Voyager... that was a great episode, wasn't it? I also loved it when Chakotay stepped down from Command and became a male stripper in the mess hall. Ah the memories. It was also a wonderful episode when Harry finally followed his heart and changed into Harriet and then married Vorik. What cute kids they had....

Or when the Doc wanted to learn about humor and downloaded a hologram of Andy Kaufman? Especially when the Q thought he was a new captain and had the "galactic annoyance" tables turned on them!

But I couldn't believe it when B'Elanna shaved her head. That was too much ridge for my liking.

Oh, remember when Starship Voyeur from a parallel universe made an appearance! What was with Janeway's body hair?

But I just LOVED the bit where Seven finds that little Borg Baby and raises it as her own and calls it 'Half Of Nine'. That sweet little Borg Baby! Tried to assimilate everyone at one time or another! Gosh darn it!

Harry Kim...is the weakest character? Hello, did you see Kes?? Even Neelix! Seriously--when you watch the whole thing (I won't say what happens) and see all Kim has been through, you'd seriously start thinking he's 'strong', in a sense.

I'm done ranting now. XD Overall though, your theories (Except 7) Are quite accurate.

Kes and Neelix never really bothered me, perhaps because as non-starfleet aliens I have lower expectations of them. Harry Kim, on the other hand, just seems like a plastic one-dimensional guy much of the time.

It's been tough not to have prejudices when I've been exposed to so much anti-Voyager ranting here on the board. But one thing I've learned is that my tastes don't always correspond to others, and that's true with food, movies, interior decoration, and women

I think that just like TOS Voyager was before its time in many ways. However, as time goes by it's been attracting new fans and the appreciation for it is growing.

After all, TOS went off the air after three seasons because the ratings were so bad and look where we are now.

Unlike DS9, say, Voyager starts off really well and reaches its zenith around Season 3/4. Late Voyager loses the buzz though.

Good point. You may be right. I didn't appreciate DS9 at all until it went off the air.

I'm only part-way into season 5, but so far I have to agree with you. The introduction of Seven of nine in season 4 truly improved the series. There was nothing wrong with Kess per se, it's just that Seven's character allowed for all sorts of interesting opportunities for stories. Jeri Ryan is an excellent actress and somehow makes me forget entirely that she's a beautiful woman -- no small feat considering I am a typical shallow male.

Season 5 is off to a good start, too. The only dud so far is Once Upon a Time, but the series strongly attoned for that sin by the follow-up Timeless, Garrett Wang's finest moment as Ensign Kim.
