I'm seeing Star Trek 2 on the big screen

Threads like these make me feel so old. How many of you out there are too young to have seen TWOK in the theatre in its initial release?

I should have said that I'm seeing it - again - on the big screen... I was a young child but I did see TWOK when it was released. I had a father that made sure I went on opening night....

I saw it in the theater probably the weekend it was released or maybe the weekend after. I don't recall which.

I attended a similar double feature in June. Both TRON and TWOK had film maker panels afterwards and TRON was even shown in 70mm, six-track. It was a wonderful technical presentation. TWOK was a standard 35mm print.

And yes, TWOK was surround sound in 1982. Dolby Stereo became very popular in 1977 with the release of Star Wars. For a specific surround effect listen for the doors to open behind you after Kirk's line, "Alright, open it up."

And in response to sbk's original question, I was 2-1/2 when TWOK premiered, so I was more than a bit young to be seeing it. ;)

The Voyage Home was actually the first Trek movie I ever saw (a neighbor with a better cable package than ours taped it off of either HBO or PRISM for us). The Undiscovered Country was the first one I saw in theaters.

About a year ago, I got to watch ST2 on the big screen. A movie theatre near where I lived was having a summer classic movie fest where every Sunday at 9pm, a "classic" film was shown. ST2 was one of them. It was great! The print was old and scratched up, but that really added to the experience.

I saw at two different cinemas. One was in a small town in Missouri and one was in San Francisco. I have no idea what kind of sound systems were available in those days, but the sound quality in the San Francisco theater was far superior.

I saw it first on a battered VHS tape, but I voted for DVD, since that's about the closest thing on your poll.

Yeah, me too. At that point the tape wasn't battered though. I remember seeing the 'ABC version' a couple years later and wondering what all this extra footage was.

I was born in 1980 by the way.

I remember seeing ST 2 opening day and the next week at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. It looks great on the big screen in a good surround sound theater. It also helps if the print has not seen too much damage. You enjoyed a special treat.

We're about the same age, but I distinctly remember seeing TVH as my first Trek movie in the theater. For some reason, I recall the theather had these real cool sami-reclining chairs. They knocked the place down 10 years ago and replaced it with this theater they were desperate to squeeze as many screens into as possible and you get this cramped theater with a really small screen. :brickwall:

I saw TMP opening day at the Chinese, but I thought TWOK opened at the crappy Vine theater down the street, because that's where I saw it with my Dad.
I'm trying to remember if the Vine was second-run (like it is today) in 1982.
If so, then it took a long time for me to convince my Dad to come see it with me. (He'd always make fun of the Drydock scene in TMP after he saw it on cable.)

So... my friday night screening of TWOK was AMAZING! there was a good crowd on hand and every one had a good time... cheering and clapping just everytime Kirk kicked Khan's ass! it was really great! Two things that really stuck in my mind as I left the screening:

1. Spocks death has got to be one of THE best deaths of a hero in any movie. It really, really punches you in the gut and has real reason behind it... Just think if Trek had ended with two and Spock would have never returned... I think we'd still be feeling the hurt of the death of a good friend... Nimoy and Shat were really on it during the death scene too.

2. Can anyone ever play Kirk and Spock other than Nimoy and Shatner? I'm really pulling for Star Trek XI but I'm not sure that just anyone can play these characters...

well... People still love Star Trek and that was shown to me again this past friday night... Makes me want to see the rest of the big screen Trek on the big screen again with a room full of fans!

Okay dude, really glad you got to see it on the big screen, BUT
which version was it????

A showing like this may come to our towns & some of us might like to know what version!!!

Thnaks!!!

The website says it's a 35mm print. The longer DVD/TV cut only exists on video, therefore this screening was of the original theatrical cut.
