I'm Moving (and starting Law School)

Dude, I'm jealous. DC seems like such an awesome place to live. I was only there for a weekend and I'd love to go back. Law school is going to be a challenging experience, but I have a feeling you're the kind of guy that needs to be challenged, and it's easy to tell you're educated and passionate about the subject.

I'm not going to give you any advice but just say congrats and have fun! :)

Your first year of law school will likely make your academic career. So study hard. One thing people have been saying over and over is that everyone has their own view of law school. I would agree.

However, all of us will agree that 1L is the worst of the three. The professors WILL bring you down in order to build you back up. Make sure you brief the cases that first semester so you begin to understand how to look for the issues and rules in the cases. It's an acquired skill.

Make sure you take at least one night a week off and give yourself some time to party. Otherwise you WILL burn out.

Feel free to drop me a line for some insight.

GO PATRIOTS! You'll be back at my old stomping grounds at the Arlington Campus! ROCK ON!

Make sure to stop by Mario's Pizza at least once. PHENOMENAL. Also, El Pollo Rico is pretty good too. :techman:

Pollo Rico got mentioned in my guided tour. I've been all but guaranteed that GMU people will always be there.

Thanks for the list of places, definitely want to check them out. Brew, same for you, but I trust we'll meet up sooner or later to visit them ;)

I know there are a couple of law school people here. Any advice will be appreciated. Also, for any DC/Arlington people, recommendations of cool places to go to are nice.

Welcome to the neighborhood. :bolian:

As for what to do in DC: The Smithsonian, the Jefferson Memorial, The Lincoln Memorial, the Pentagon, and, of course, the Wall.

And then on your second day...

Dunno much about NoVA, but in DC, check out Adams Morgan, maybe Dupont, and there really actually are some great divey bars all over, even around the great Tourist Trap. Drinks and food will be more expensive than you're used to, but it's a happy hour town. Figure out your happy hour progression and you'll be golden. You must eat at the Amsterdam House Falafel, the Chili Bowl and Dukem. Adams Morgan is a great place to wander and find cool ethnic restaurants and hole-in-the-wall bars (avoid the flashy clubs - I was once charged $7 for a 12-oz Yuengling, which they attempted to justify by telling me it was an import :vulcan:).

For music, the Black Cat is a great venue with two stages. Keep an eye on the City Paper for things to do.

Thanks for the advice. Music was one thing I don't know much about (I know Philly's attractions like the back of my hand, but DC is another world to me).

Root for the Ravens. You don't want to be a Skins fan, thrust me.

While I like the Ravens, I'm still an Eagles fan through and through. Trust me, I won't ever be rooting for the Skins. I've already found the names of a couple of places that show Eagles games. I'm going to show everyone what it's like to have a Philly-sports fan nearby.

Rush hour traffic is a nightmare, especially on the beltway; don't try to drive anywhere between 4-7 or so. If you get a parking ticket in the city (and you will), pay it on time; the fees are unconscionable. MVP bus is a good cheap option for getting to Philly and NYC. Weekdays, the MARC train will get you to Baltimore for $7.

I don't even have a car at the moment, so I'm not too worried about traffic. I took the MARC to get here (from Perryville) and I'll take the metro to get around.

Now once I run out of food and have to find a grocery store, that'll be an entirely different issue, but I'll worry about that when facing starvation.

One more: Getting faced with a bunch of freaked out Hill Rats at a Capital Hill bar on election night is an experience everyone should enjoy at least once in their life.

Haha, good advice.

Yeah, I see no logical reason to try and drive through DC. If everything you need is metro accessible, that's the way to go. Just be prepared for random, unpredictable and very irritating delays (like on the red line).
