If you were in the Admiral seat

BadJane

Ensign
Newbie
You are a Human admiral in charge of Earth's defense. You have intercepted a transmission from a Dominion agent situated somewhere on Earth. The transmission indicates that the Dominion have almost completed construction of a new super-weapon capable of destroying an entire star system in an instant. When the weapon is complete, it will be indestructible, however, in five days time the weapon will be vulnerable to attack. Unfortunately, the transmission you intercepted also indicates that the Dominion will attack Earth in only two days. You know that the agent is still somewhere on Earth, and that to prepare for invasion would certainly alert the Dominion to the fact that you are aware of there plans, thus losing the opportunity to destroy the weapon. Do you save your home world from certain defeat, or do you save countless others from annihilation.

Can you please make sure if your interested that it cannot be any shorter than one paragraph - with a paragraph being at least five (5) full sentences in length. Please could you be content, thought process, and creativity for for this thread. However, thought process is the point that I most like to here.

Send 19,999 ships to Earth and send the Enterprise after the superweapon, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?

I would save my homeworld from certain defeat. In everyway I would make sure my homeworld is protected, and if I can in the meantime either warn or let others who are able to help those who are going to be annihiliated. This may sound like I do not care about other life, but if my planet was destroyed I wouldn't have a home to come home to anymore, and while there maybe countless other worlds to live on, it still wouldn't be "home".

If Starfleet doesn't have the resources available to both defend the Earth and destroy this Dominion super weapon, then obviously the only solution is to go after the super weapon. Triage, minimize potential casualties, even if it means Earth is hurt or destroyed.

However, since this is Star Trek, there is always the possibility for time travel. Send a ship back in time and destroy the weapon when it was more vulnerable and then defend Earth from the more conventional attack.

I know, it is a very non-specific answer, but the scenario is rather vague. The devil is always in the details.

I would write a two-part season finale episode with the first part showing the devastating results of the initial invasion strike, then take a vacation and let someone else figure out a surprise ending which involves the hero team figuring out a way to slingshot around the sun and fix the root cause of the problem before it starts.

There, that should be a classic Trek solver.

I would:

A. As quietly as possible, move a strong defense fleet into position just outside of Sol System, ready to warp in when the invasion begins.

B. Quietly contact my allies and, possibly, non-Dominion-allied adversaries that the Federation at least has long-term relationships with, like the Tholians and the Gorn, to go take out the Dominion weapon. NOBODY is going to like the Dominion having a weapon that can wipe out whole star systems.

C. Focus recon and other information gathering resources on making sure that the Dominion agent wasn't "overheard" on purpose, as a tactic to make us allocate our resources against the false threats.

D. Put standby teams in place at The Guardian of Forever and in a ship or ships capable of performing the temporal Slingshot (preferably at an uninhabited and little noticed star), just in case either plan goes intolerably bad. Actually, this would be SOP if I was in charge, regardless of this particular scenario.

I would:

1. Quietly rescind all leaves for anyone within 36 hours of travel of the Sol system and have them report to fleet HQ.

2. Conduct covert espionage to verify that the Dominion is indeed building this weapon.

3. While waiting for confirmation that the weapon does exiost, I would quietly contact all of my allies and alert them to the possibility that the weapon exists.

4. Quietly assemble a fleet of Federation and allied ships near Sol, but hidden from sensors to defend Earth.

5. Upon confirmation of the existence of the weapon, I would pass this information on to my allies, along with it's location. Then I would pass the information along to anyone who was not allied with the Dominion, and with whom I have any longterm relationship with.

6. Federation ships that are not capable of reaching Earth within 48 hours will be ordered to cover patrol routes, stand by at the Guardian of Forever, or report to Deep Space 9 for possible assignment to whatever fleet attempts to destroy said weapon.

Use the Captain Mackenzie Calhoun strategy, destroy Earth myself before the enemy can arrive.

.

Though I look like a Human Admiral (TM), I'm in fact a shapeshifting Dominion spy.

I shove off from Earth just long enough before the explosion so that my view of the destruction is optimized. I laugh as I rock out a harmless shock wave, then I Link with a Founder babe and have some post-annihilation fun. :p

If I knew of the weapons location I would:

Contact section 31 and have them send a cloaked ship to the location of the superweapon and destroy it using illegal subspace weapons.

One of the most common and famous military tactic questions in history adapted for Star Trek fans.

It was also the final exam question for a class I took on Presidential Military Strategy.

Here's what you have to do:

You have no option other than to allow the attack to happen. If you evacuate/enhance defense then you reveal to the enemy force that you have broken their communications codes and they will change them - possibly causing you to lose the war. If you attempt to evacuate some and not all you have the same thing happen, but you could risk a panic because of loose lips.

You do nothing.
