For the type of roll you would want to play. Remember, episodes are not written very far in advance and the way someone plays a character can affect the writing of future episodes.

I picked engineer, but with my luck and talent it would probably turn into a roll like the first chief engineer on TNG. Most people don't even realize there was a chief engineer that first season.

Make that three. I noticed yet another when watching the first year TNG episode about the planet that developed the weapons for sale and the weapon destroyed the creators. Jordy was in charge of the bridge and some guy that was chief engineer and had a higher rank than Jordy wanted to take command.
