If you had a choice, What CLASS would you call the ENT-J?

Nothing much I'd say, from what I read over at drexfiles Doug said the saucer section alone was about two miles long! and 30 decks high!

I believe Doug Drexler says it is Universe-class. OK by me. I like to respect the designer's opinions on such things. Also, it's a logical progression.

Doug also gave me permission to pretend that the Enterprise-J actually has both the saucer-deflector of the finished ship and the 'Altair' wing ship as a secondary hull (so it doesn't go ZOMG! I'tsbasedrightofftheNX!). As such, I have no idea what those pizza cutter things are pictures of...

But the Enterprise-J is Universe class as far as I'm concerned.

If I had to pick myself, I'd probably give it an alien class name (since we don't see enough of those), or maybe Federation class if we don't accept the other one as part of the canon. Naming each after a planet or star of the union might be nice as well.

Why would the previous Federation class ship even need to be ignored? Lots of 20th century navies reuse their class names within a relatively short span...

Since Drexler designed and created the ship, by him calling it the Universe class makes it official. Not canon, since it was never spoken or seen on screen, but definitely official.

My favorites are: Athena Class, Pandora Class, or Jovian Class

Although, I have to admit I would love to see a class that doesn't have such a "human" distinction. Maybe an Andorian name?

Well until those in the Star Trek franchise decide what to call it "Universe Class" is perfectly reasonable.

However Atlas, Omni, and Pulsar sound good too.

I'd be really uncomfortable with that in Trek, myself, particularly when the ships can be in service for such a long time. I like to think names of class ships are "retired," so to speak. Even in the distant future, I'm sure they haven't run out 'o names

HMM! I never noticed that before! it looks as if the ENT-J in that scene is no bigger then a GALAXY Class vessel! and that there might indeed be a ''SECONDARY'' hull!

We know the hull is many decks thick, that it only looks flat because it's so wide. Maybe it looks small because of a trick of layers and perspective. Archer is on a deck under what we can see through the window. After the decks we can see, there is a rise in the hull before the ship continues outwards, so we don't see the rest of the ship from the camera's perspective.

We could also just be very close to the edge.

What if the ship has Dimensional Shielding which distorts it outside dimensions to make it tougher, kinda like the way a Tardis is bigger on the inside.

What if the ship has Dimensional Shielding which distorts it outside dimensions to make it tougher, kinda like the way a Tardis is bigger on the inside.

One of the future starships did have some feature wherein it was bigger inside than outside. Some sort of toughening isn't my first idea of how one might use such a capability, but I can imagine something akin to a cloak working very effectively that way. Anyone remember Arthur C. Clarke's "Exponential Field?"

May I just say I love the nacelles on this ship? They're a combination of the simplicity of the Galaxy class and the sleekness and over-the-top-cool details of later designs.
