If you do a war then doesn't Pike and the Enterprise have to show up?

That line would make no sense coming from Picard. That's something a Klingon would say.

They were on diplomatic duty because the Diplomatic Corps was busy dealing with the aftermath of the Dominion War.

Which leaves Picard's line devoid of any war-related meaning.

When did Picard stop being an explorer? He explored nothing in the TNG movies. In "Emergence", he searched for new colony sites, but that was his only potential foray outside known space in Season Seven. Perhaps he's been dissatisfied with his lot for much longer than he's had the E-E.

We didn't see Sovereign class in those fleets because of some internal decision between DS9 N TNG producers, etc.

Akiras were seen in thevfleets n even during an episode where Sisko n teamm captured a Dominion ship

In universe the Sovereign class ships fought in the war IMO, we just didn't see them due to above. One of strongest ship classes in the fleet, they were on the front lines

...In that respect, it's sort of relevant that Zachary Quinto was in no way involved in filming the first season. As far as we know, and we should know. Pike can be whomever, Number One can be whomever, but the studio should be interested in the face of Quinto first and foremost here.

So we're probably talking second season gimmick at best. But when that one rolls, all the above applies in full.

Um, if that's the case - why didn't they use Jonathan Simpson (who played 'Sarek' in ST2009) to reprise the Sarek role for ST: D? (ST09 and ST:D take place at roughly the same year - in separate Universes of course - so there is no 'age difference' of the character to contend with.)

Zachary Quinto is the JJ Abramsverse Mr. Spock. were they to use him for the same part in ST: D if would just fan the flames of controversy and have some fans screaming - "See ST: D DOES take place in the JJ-Verse!"

That said, I'd be surprised if we saw Spock at all in this first season. He's on another ship in another part of the galaxy during these events, or they would have had teh 1701 (under Pike) show up to the Boarder.

You're thinking of Ben Cross from Star Trek 09 (2240s flashbacks and 2258). Jonathan Simpson played young Sarek (2230s flashback) in Star Trek V. That was almost thirty years ago, so he's probably too old now (and a professional photographer and acting coach who's most famous role is still Star Trek V).

(I don't care what an encylcopedia says)

Spock says in 'The Menagerie' that the events of 'The Cage' happened 13 years ago.

Discovery is 10 years before that, so the Constitution class, or the Enterprise at least is out there.

George Kirk? Not that I've ever heard of nor read in any book or comic. Captain Robau, on the other hand, could well have remained in command of the Kelvin for years after 2233 and may have been promoted to admiral after he stepped down from the captain's chair. The U.S.S. Kelvin and Robau would be a welcome sight in the new series to help confirm in the minds of skeptical, hardheaded fans that it's set in the Prime timeline and not the Kelvin.

Not that seeing the Kelvin and Faran Tahir in an episode would satisfy the most hardcore fanboys who will keep insisting that the look of DSC means that this isn't the same continuity as TOS, TNG, et. al. but if we saw Robau alive and well in 2256 and wearing an Admiral's uniform that would go a long ways towards settling the issue.

They would just take the Kelvin as proof its in the Alt reality. Also the Kelvin would need reworked as the textures are way off what DSC is using.

But you can always mentally justify the physical appearance and aesthetics of the Kelvin as being those of a starship designed and launched in the early 23rd century and thus a product of a previous era. Frankly I'm not worried about those fanboys because nothing will satisfy them short of the entire series being reshot with TOS-style control interfaces and pullover tunics with rank braids on the sleeves.

Some fans are probably a hopeless cause at this point so it's best to do what ties DSC and TOS more closely together in the continuity and creates the best drama for viewers. Focus on what connects the new to the old and gives the audience the most entertaining and engaging stories. The hypernerds will never admit defeat but the producers can give everybody a show so good that the whinging of a small minority will barely be heard or acknowledged.

No you really can't Because it is nothing like the walker, which is around the same age. The JJ movies used a type of textures and other design elements that are unique to them. You can use the Kelvin layout, but that ship just will not fit with the DSC design style. Its like Plopping the TOS cruiser into the TNG era and claiming they are the same year ship and year. It just does not work. I like the Kelvin design, but it would need rebuilt and re textured. The Inside however works fine.

I do agree that those ragging over this not looking like a fan film of an outdated 50 year old TV show will never be happy.

Old man Kirk might be an interesting thing to throw in there as, based on Spock's talk with young James T. Kirk in an alternate universe, George Kirk lived long enough to see James take command of a starship. Thus he should still be alive in the Discovery present. Though we don't know if he would still be in Starfleet, nor if he was promoted after his tour on USS Kelvin.

The old Diane Carey novels had George Kirk as a security officer that sometimes served with Robert April on the USS Enterprise.

No it wouldn’t. It looks similar to the NX

Texture wise, not it does not. The design forms are fine, but nacell design, Deflector design and textures are all unique to the JJ films. Its just something that stands out as glaring. In DSC the walker class is the same era as the Einstein class( I think the class name is canon). Its a whole different projection and art direction.

My mistake - but the point was - they could have gotten the actor who played Sarek in JJ Abrams Star trek to reprise the role for this series but didn't - ergo, there's no reason to assume they would try and tap Zachary Quinto to do the role (if they ever decided to have a 'Mr. Spock' cameo of full scene) for ST: D.

That's fundamentally different, though. Sarek is a recurring character. Spock's appearance would be a pure recognizability gimmick, and it would be likely to fail without recognizability.

It's pretty much the same as with Kirk's old ship. They could have "modernized" her for every one of her appearances in spinoff Trek, but they never ever did. Lost with that would be the all-important recognizability value, after all.

None of the ships in the episodes had a consistent design language, so why would it matter here?

Historically speaking, warships have different designers, sometime from one year to the next. Different shipyards build one ship differently from one of her own sisterships to thr point were someone can play "spot the differences" with them. As built an Ise-class battleship doesn't look all that much like a Nagato-class battleship, and certainly nothing like a Tenryu-class light cruiser, yet all were built in less than five years of each other. And they don't look all that much like America ship of similar age, though Tenryu might be similar to a British D-class cruiser as a design influence.

So realistically, art direction is not a real issue. It is a imagined issue for things that really don't need to look like each other if they were built in different places or designed by different people even within the same year.
