If You Could Rewrite TNG

If I could rewrite TNG: I would start with season 7.

Season 7 was plagued on three fronts. 1. Most of the writers jumping ship to help get DS9 off the ground during it's 2nd season. 2. Running out of ideas. It had all been done before and TNG really needed a shot in the arm. 3. The upcoming movie, that would become GEN. The saucer section crash of the ENT-D was planned for the climax of season 6, but was held over. Once they knew a movie was coming down the pipeline.

With season 7. I would've given it a season long arc, to wrap up all good things about TNG. A last hurrah, to give the show a "take me around the world again". Feel.

Moving on to the movies. With GEN, everyplace Berman, Braga and Moore were told to zig, they decided to zag and it shows. The plan, as Jeri Taylor stated, was to do something off beat and unexpected. Which presumably the audience was supposed to find charming. The movie fell apart in telling it's own story and when you think about the rules established in the film.

Doing the buddy cop, "two captains - one destiny" story everyone was expecting to receive, would be all you need to do to improve GEN.

FC is fine the way it is, but mostly because Berman, Braga and Moore learned several lessons from working on GEN.

INS was another case of zigging, instead of zagging. In Piller's book (Fade In) and interviews from Berman; both addressed the idea of doing a Dominon War film. As it was the current arc on the show and the positive reaction the audience gave the action and space battles of FC. Piller decided to zag and make INS a softer story to fit his current outlook on life. A story that feels like an extended episode of the show.

I would've showcased change. Promote Riker to Captain and Date to FO. Give Riker command of the USS Prometheus and set the TNG against a faction of the Founders. The movie didn't need to end the Dominion War, just showcase an interesting conflict of ideas and an non negotiable peace with an enemy intent on destroying the Feddies.

Nemesis - Make Wesley the villain! The Wunderkind grew up into a mean old crow. Give Beverly something to do, as she unites the TNG crew to save her son's soul.

not any rewriting, but a production tweek, applies to DS9 as well, for crowd scenes at Starbases, or stray extras on the ship I'd dig out the alien masks made for TMP, not for speaking parts, they weren't good enough for that, but for color and variety in Star Fleet/ Federation settings the masks were on the lot gathering dust

The biggest thing I'd like to change about TNG is to have a better developed cast of secondary characters (bridge crew, engineers, maybe even a few more civilians) like we got later on DS9. The E-D is supposed to hold over a thousand personnel, I wish they'd've SHOWN that!

Been thinking about this some more. One thing I would do is remove some of the character study episodes in the series (especially later in the run) and replace them with some good old fashioned TOS five year mission type exploration stories. The Lwaxana stories, Menage A Troi, Dark Page, and Half A Life, in particular would be the first to go. Their removal would improve the series immeasurably.

TOS managed to have stories that combined both - "Obsession", for one. Kirk's need to destroy the creature born of a bad past encounter combined with fending it off in the present.

I think there was some fear by the producers to let Picard and Dr Crusher have a relationship. They should have. It would have led to some good stories and character development.

Despite its early season problems, there isn't too much I'd change about TNG. It was a really good show, and most of the episodes still hold up. Honestly considering the grueling schedule, the budget, its amazing what they managed to do.

I would have have gave Yar more to do so you would have a strong female character on the show and I would give her a higher rank than Data for a reason I will mention later. Worf would have started off as pilot and LaForge would have started off as chief engineer. Around season 3 I would bring the Thomas Riker character into the show and after another 5 or 6 episodes I would promote Will Riker to captain and have him leave the show but you still get to have a Riker around in Thomas Riker. Yar would be made first officer, Worf would become chief of security and Riker would be the new pilot and Captain RIker would be a reacurring character. I would have made the Riker/Troi romance a bigger thing because the actors have chemistry and I like them together.

Wesley would be more of a bad ass and less of a nerd. He would still be feeling the trauma of his dad being killed. Barclay would become a regular also in season 3. For the love of all that is good I would add more extra's and make the ship fill alive like it does in "Generations."

Jason
Wesley as a bad-ass?:wtf:
Wesley?
A bad ass?
Maybe less of a suck up,
but a bad ass?:guffaw:

This one is going to be a challenge. There’s not much I think I would change really. However, if I had my druthers:

-I would age Wesley and have him be an ensign who was harboring a chip on his shoulder over Jack Crusher’s death, which he blamed on Picard. Wesley had gotten into some trouble, he’s brilliant, but not the easiest person to work with. So, Dr. Crusher, with Picard’s (perhaps guilty) consent gets him an assignment aboard the Enterprise. (I also would've been okay with the Leslie Crusher idea as well, as long as they kept the chip on the shoulder).

-Dr. Crusher and Picard’s would have a knottier, more complicated relationship that eventually blossomed into romance in the TNG movies.

-Geordi would be chief engineer off the bat, perhaps the youngest chief engineer in Starfleet, or in Starfleet history. Geordi’s love life would also be much better, perhaps with Aquiel or Sonya Gomez. And his parents would’ve been on the ship two or three times at least.

-Dr. Pulaski would be back for a Nemesis cameo at least.

-Tasha would’ve died in the episode “The Neutral Zone” paralleling her alternate timeline capture by the Romulans.

-I would've built up the Worf-Troi romantic relationship more. It came like out of nowhere and then just ended out of nowhere.

-Tomalak would’ve been a recurring villain, like a Kor for Picard.

-I would have more TOS aliens like the Orions, Andorians, and Tellarites on episodes and among the crew.

-I would replace the Duras Sisters with DaiMon Bok in Generations. Bok had more of a tie to Picard and it would’ve been great to see a D’Kora-class marauder on the big screen. (I think the Duras Sisters would’ve been fun to watch during the Dominion War).

-I would’ve brought the neural parasites back at least once.

-As others have mentioned, I would've put Troi in uniform much sooner in the series. I also liked the idea of keeping Tom Riker around, while promoting Will to a captaincy.

-In Generations, probably would've had Kirk disappear or something, not 'die' die.

-For Insurrection, I would've tied it more into the Dominion War and made the villains either the Romulans or the Dominion. F. Murray Abraham playing a Romulan, Cardassian, or Vorta would've been pretty cool.

-In Nemesis I would've moved Riker and Troi off to the Titan early in the film so we get a shot or scenes of the Titan. I also would've brought in Tomalak and/or Sela.

And there is a part of me that would've liked to have seen a TNG with Captain Riker and Commander Shelby, with Picard remaining Locutus. I think Shelby just brought a lot of needed dramatic tension.

:DI would keep Riker the more serious, "down to business" character he seemed to be in the first series, until Frakes was given lease to make him more like himself. Troi should instead have been the more adventurous "fun loving" character instead (Just because I recognise the show needed at least one, but Riker didn't quite cut it for me).

She could be the one trying to liven everybody up, with a positive outlook, that Riker didn't always get on with.

Also, we'd get to see cetacean ops :bolian:. Oh, and Yar should have been an Andorian.

More like her mother?
To some degree, but without the desperation or obliviousness to others discomfort. In fact, I think that could even bring a more interesting dynamic between her and Lwaxxana than we got. They were similar, but Deanna would be constantly having to remind her mother of how others dealt with their emotions.

If there was one thing that I would rewrite about TNG it would be Tasha Yar’s exit. I would have had her transferred to Starfleet Intelligence and then in later seasons bring her back for some Intelligence stories involving her and maybe Riker or Wesley.

If Q who was (re)written now, it probably would have presented Sonya as a love interest for Geordi, only to have her assimilated right before his eyes by that invading Borg scout… (not that I'm sure that would have been an improvement over the original script, though).
