If You Could Rewrite TNG

I love TNG, but it could be dreadfully dull at times.

I'd make it a little more adventure-oriented and less static. I'd also eliminate the preachyness in the dialogue.

Most importantly- I'd stick to the original idea that Picard is the "inside man" and Riker is the off-ship leader for away teams, and maintain the idea that families are on the ship because of an extended long-range mission far from the core of the federation.

I think if they had stuck to that, rather than ferrying diplomats and being errand runners for Starfleet, it would have been an even better show.

sorry to hear marina had a problem with it.

i've always wanted one, i got the hips for it, if not (unfortunately) the chest.
To quote Marina: "I f'n hated that costume. I am also a symmetrical girl and the *gestures her top* bothered me." She noted how she didn't appreciate having to get naked out of it just to go to the toilet. So EVERYONE had to know her 'business'.

Holodeck: I would have more social/networking built into it (taking gaming from updating the 1980s to updating the 2010s), where the holodeck allows people from different worlds/ships to commune together. I would use holodeck adventures to build out recurring Starfleet guest cast who would show up at Starbases and on ships. I would also use that capability to allow crew to have extended off-ship missions and to follow up on mission of the week.

Bridge: I would have more time showing Picard and Riker doing or overseeing work around the ship. I would add a set like an officer's ready room which is a multi-person desk setup.

Jellico/Shelby: I would have kept Shelby for a year under Riker. I would have kept Picard in rehab (whether by holodeck or on the ship. I still would have had her promoted to a fleet-wide role. I would have had Riker stay as first officer (with the 4 pips) upon Picard's return before being promoted away (Tom Riker staying is fine). With Riker gone, had Worf as first officer. I would have kept Jellico arc last for a year, with Worf and Jellico in perfect sync in strictness and combat readiness and Data/Troi providing the kickback from the crew.

Post Locutus: Benjamin Sisko would not have been the first officer to be angry at Picard in Caretaker. It would be a once-season event and he would have sessions with Troi about his recovery even after being reinstated. Also would have had the Borg wipe out Betezed or another member world with a recurring crew member.

Mirror Universe: Yes. I would have had Picard/Crusher go into the mirror Universe and have to choose whether to help the Terran Empire or let the KCA (which also has every Federation member world save Earth and Vulcan) win in a pivotal battle. Picard given an omnious statement about how in the future, maybe humanity will fight back in this universe and create a Federation of it's own.

Travel. At least once, I would have the enterprise spend 4-5 episodes at high warp with nothing going on, and the crew either in preperation or living.

A la Barclay visiting a stranded Voyager. And imagine the horror when your friend, who you're playing a holographic game with, or chatting with in a hologram of your favorite cafe, suddenly goes into medical distress back where they currently are. You reach out to help them, but you're powerless to do anything, since the program cuts out at that moment, or goes into "watch-only" mode. Extra points if you're a medical personnel.

Riker would NOT have fallen for Minuet, nor would he have expressed ANY interest in Soren. Like ... at all. Also, Riker wouldn't have acted like such a vexatious douche in "Hide & Q." Also, Barclay would never have been a STARFLEET Officer. He would've been a one-off, if he ever got on the show at all -- in "The Nth Degree." Otherwise, I never cared for that schlemiel.

The whole Soren relationship didn't really suit Riker. She didn't seem like his type, and it's not his style to get so serious so quickly. It would've made more sense with Geordie.

I believe the noted philosopher Elvis Presley said it best, "A little less conversation, a little more action, please"

yeah...just to spice it up a little. I don't mean the obligatory ENT or VOY "last 5 min space battle" or whatever...but just a little more kinetic energy and fun. It's a great show as it is...but some action / adventure instead of pondering and discussing would have gone a long way.

but just a little more kinetic energy and fun
Simply increasing the pace at which dialog is exchanged would do wonders.

Put the audio track through the software program that leaves each spoken word the same, but decreases the spacing of the words. Then adjust the video to match the new speed of the audio track. See what that does.

While we're at it, speed up space battles by 300 percent, again increase thme video pacing.

Boom-boom-boom, and it's over.

Edit out a third to a half of everything Troi has to say.

Devote the resulting new few minutes to character development, plot development, universe building, B-story and C-story.

I would've had 90% of the first season re-written entirely. That's really all I'd ever change about TNG.

I agree but I think Frakes pulled it off believably and sensitively. The problem was the actress was too subdued and somber.

I would have had Riker lose the bet to Dr. Crusher in Quality of Life and thus be forced to shave his beard off in season 6. After 4 years it would have been nice to see Frakes clean shaven again.
