I love TNG, but it could be dreadfully dull at times.
I'd make it a little more adventure-oriented and less static. I'd also eliminate the preachyness in the dialogue.
Most importantly- I'd stick to the original idea that Picard is the "inside man" and Riker is the off-ship leader for away teams, and maintain the idea that families are on the ship because of an extended long-range mission far from the core of the federation.
I think if they had stuck to that, rather than ferrying diplomats and being errand runners for Starfleet, it would have been an even better show.
