I'm not finding it an enhancement. I find it something nipping around the edges of what is already known. I find it incredibly dull because it represents nothing but a footnote in history.

It is like a Pocket Books novel on TV. All the major toys have to be put back in the box undamaged.

Everyone's mileage may vary.

We've known for years the Klingons and Federation have been mortal enemies. Now we're finding out why. I assume we'll also have the Battle of Axanar (done by the people who actually own it) and other monumental moments from which were alluded to in TOS.

I though it was him throwing an evil spellbook in the Mount Doom... Yeah, that part of the plot totally unraveled at some point...

I like the existential question of "Is a sufficiently advanced alien actually NOT a god?" versus the usual Star Trek reversal of the question, "Is god just a sufficiently advanced alien?" However, I think they sort of fell directly in fantasy versus Space Opera.

They're the two biggest kids on the block, and are bound to fight. It doesn't need to be anything more than that. Most often, it is nothing more than that.

And yet common Trek lore in sourcebooks and novels has been it was more than that.

Which we're now seeing.

I would probably note Space Battleship Yamato as having one of the best reboots in the last decade. With both the Yamato 2199 series and the new Yamato 2202 series.

Question on the Klingon ship the shuttle computer identifed as a D7, have the background people said anything about that being a mistake? That ship gets called several thing that are potential contradictory in the episode.

Apart from TOS to TMP, there have been no redesigns of Klingon makeup. They're bumpy headed creatures.
There were one set of Klingons for TOS, one for the movies through ENT, one set for JJTrek (part of the ENT timeline), and one for DSC.

And according to Roddenberry, they were in TOS too.

Psychologists refer to this as rationalizing.

To be honest they could do with rebooting the show. That way they could introduce some hard rules to help create drama, give the universe some design consistency and avoid easy fixes.

Like transporters need a lot of power (which they supposedly do, yet the show treats it like it can be run off a car battery) and can't beam people onto a unpredicatable moving target (like the power to use a transporter is equivalent to the power requirements of warp 1). Warp drive needs a time to charge up. No warp trails to follow. No magic life signs detectors. Small vessels don't have warpdrive beyond warp 1. Make it so warp engines do need to be away from the crew.

There's a very easy solution to the problem that would upset some viewers while others won't care. Given that the ST franchise doesn't have a strong history of trying to please everyone, there's no reason for them not to do it:

The events of Discovery play out but in the last episode, we find out we've been in an alternate universe or timeline. Something happens that shifts us to the Prime timeline. Everything changes -- suddenly they're in Cage-style uniforms, and the interior of Discovery looks more like what we'd expect as a precursor to TOS. It's just a brief moment, so no moaning from fans who want to complain the TOS universe is hokey. For fans who feel cheated that the whole series fooled them into thinking the series was in the Prime universe, who cares? The series will be over. For ones who go histrionic that they will never watch Trek again, again, who cares? They'll be back. Any canon violations will now be resolved.

The point is actually still advisable as the Bible is a document collection which, even if you are a guy who believes in its divine inspiration, is one compiled over centuries by different people. Many authors adding a little piece at a time.

I.e. Like Star Trek.
I'll keep my Bible and my Star Trek separate, thank you very much ;)

There's a crossover I would enjoy.

IF THEY ADMITTED STD WASN'T PRIME, I would say, it would be much better for the series reception amongst the hard corest of Trekkers/Trekkies in the fandom. Heck, I would even accept that the Kelvin Time line warped TOS into a new frame which created a more Technologically advanced Star Fleet because the Kelvin Time line resulted in a simultaneous Cross Dimension between Kelvin advancements and the TOS timeline, they became intertwined, resulting in a new timeline. I'd actually applaud that!

Like two Dimensional Branes colliding and taking continuity and tech from each other leaving behind a sort of amalgam universe..

thus.. Leaves open a possibility of a new Kirk-etc TV series if one would accept such an outrageous idea..scary to contemplate actually...

I have been watching Star Trek since I was SIX and I want this to be the Prime Timeline and am glad it's the Prime timeline.

I've mentioned this on other threads before, but IMO the MAIN thing that the staff mean when they say that it's "Prime" is that it "isn't the Kelvin Timeline" but rather the end result of various temporal events on the core timeline that is primarly a sequel to the last Star Trek show, ie Enterprise (the callbacks to which are fairly clear and obvious).

Which is a bit of a distinction without difference.

We could also, I dunno, go BUGFUCK CRAZY and say "it's a TV show with very different values between every iteration of the show."

I'm old enough to be a Star Trek fan who remembers how angry many TOS fans were that TNG didn't have the original cast.

needed a poll option for "I'd prefer them to admit it's not prime"
In my head cannon it's a separate universe. Too much is different to be explained away by "audiences don't want a dated 60s looking set"

I'd say there were a couple of takes on the Klingons in TOS.
