If there were only 5 Best Picture Oscar Nominees...

....what would they be? I think films like Up and The Blind Side would not have made the final cut. These are the films I think would've been the only nominees:

Avatar
The Hurt Locker
Inglorious Basterds
Precious
Up in the Air

Any disagreements?

Boot Avatar, sub in Up. Or one of those artsy films.

But not that thing with Sandra Bullock! I have no idea how that slop got an nomination. I smell a payoff. :rommie:

Would be or should have?

If "would be", then I simply don't know.

If "should be", then to my mind the only films that make the cut are Avatar, The Hurt Locker and Up - and even then, in Avatar's case, only if you go on SFX and/or box office, and overlook the story.

No, that's pretty blatantly obvious. Those got the Best Director nominations, and the most nominations in other categories (between 8 and 5), and tended to be the films nominated in previous awards organizations.

Interestingly, in the past you'd usually get a "spare" Best Director nomination tossed to one of the non-Best Picture nominees; now the situation is reversed. There are a bunch of consolation Best Picture slots and Director demarcates the really significant ones.

No arguments with the likelihood of your nominees - which is what you're apparently saying, rather than advocating for one or another as "better."

On that basis, there's no way that Avatar would have been bumped from the list, and certainly not in favor of Up since the Academy has created a nice "animated feature" niche just to give themselves wiggle room.

I think Blind Side might have bumped one of your five, given how the nominating process usually works - either Precious or Basterds. But your list is probably the most likely.

I'm guessing Hurt Locker will take Best Picture and Best Director, unless the Academy goes for one of its satisfy-all-our-friends split decisions there - in which case Cameron and Bigelow will each get a statue, and it's hard to say which will get which.

In a split, the Director Oscar would go to Bigelow, since a lot of the impetus behind THL's buzz is to reward her personally (and she has the DGA prize).

Nope. I think that's pretty much what it would have been.

I meant would be or might have been, believe me if it was up to me I could easily toss out Precious and Up in the Air for District 9.

For some reason I can't help thinking that having ten nominees may have hurt Avatar's chances for best picture since District 9 is nominated and may wind up splitting the Sci Fi vote (which could be partly why Saving Private Ryan lost since the Thin Red Line another WWII pic was also nominated) and Up may lose the Best Animated Film award since some voters may feel it's already up for Best Pic and look for another film to win.

Inglorious Basterds doesn't belong anywhere near a best picture nomination, nor best screenplay or half the other nominations it got. The whole thing was a mess. Bah! Humbug! To the lot of you!

I think the OP is dead on the money, and I still say either Avatar or Hurt Locker will go home with the little golden boy. Of that list I'd root hardest for Basterds, though.

Your statement is factually in error!

Thirded.
Best Picture has to mean the film is at its peak in all aspects. Avatar has a weak script and some wooden acting at times. The movie didn't get any writing nods and for all of Zoe's praise she isn't nominated either.

Avatar deserves every Technical award it can win, overall Best Picture it is not however.

I thought it was great but am admittedly still really surprised it scored Best Picture for a nomination.
