We all know "Voyager," and "Star Trek" in general, suffers a bad case of "Main Characters Do Everything." Most likely because the writers don't like paying extras and guest actors to say lines. Hence why Tom Paris takes over as nurse when Kes leaves, despite the fact that in a crisis, they'd want their best pilot at the helm. Or why the most important relationships are usually contained within the main cast.
But in this thread, we imagine that the writers aren't cheapskates, and any guest actor we want is available.
Who takes over as head nurse, after Kes leaves?
What episodes could've featured a recurring character, in place of the regular it featured in Canon?
A few of my ideas:
- Sam Wildman, xenobiologist, becomes the ship's main nurse after Kes leaves
- Alternatively, have the ship's hypochondriac Billy Telfer be horrified to learn that he's the most qualified candidate for the job, after Kes. The Doctor is impressed to see a physician with worse bedside manner than himself.
- Tal Celes resigns from Starfleet, and becomes the teacher for Naomi and later the Borg kids. She at first trains with an educational hologram that ends up irritating her as much as it does the kids.
- Vorik, Carrey or some other engineer ends up being the specialty in starship designs, and does most of the planning for the Delta Flyer.
- Sam, Tal Celes, or some other "lower decks" officer, is the main character on "Muse," with their limited observations about the senior staff providing the inspiration for the aliens' fanfic-y plays.
- Kes's husband in "Before and After" is Vorik, with the backstoty that they got close during telepath lessons with Tuvok.
- Give Mulchahey some visitation rights for One, it's his DNA after all!
- "One Small Step," replace Chakotay with Mortimer Harren. He'd be more likely to screw the away team due to obsessively wanting that module.
