If Kirk can be so easily recast..

Leave it to you to come along after a bit of solid good news about the new movie to remind us all how it's going to suck big donkey balls.

Then why didn't they find one yet?

because they're looking for just the right one. If they'd chosen one right away you'd be complaining they didn't look hard enough and just stuck any old guy in the part.

No one ever said he could "easily be recast" at least no more so then any part in a film.

And ah - who says they don't have some idea as to whom they want in the part. Just cause they didn't talk about doesn't mean they don't have an idea.

Reading the transcript of the Comic-Con Panel left me with the impression there's more there but they weren't gonna spill it all in one sitting.

I think they might have picked kirk, but they're waiting until 08 to announce it.

And I'm going on record right now as saying it will probably be an actor far better known than Quinto.

I don't recall anyone - including JJ Abrams - ever saying that Kirk could easily be re-cast. In fact, Shatner's looks, his voice, his delivery all combine to make him a very hard actor to replace.

I'm not taking anything away from Nimoy, Quinto or those who opted for that excellent recasting choice when I say that IMHO Kirk is a much harder character than Spock to recast in this fashion.

Show me anyplace that anyone seriously said that recasting Kirk (or Spock or anyone else) would be EASY.

I've been arguing all along that the casting is the single most challenging aspect of this film... because you have to get someone who not only looks the part, who wants to play the role as it exists (rather than trying to "redefine" it... something that only second-rate "I wanna be a STAR" types really do) and who is TALENTED ENOUGH to make us believe, without making it into a parody, that he (or she) is playing the same character we already know.

It's a HUGE challenge. I can't recall ANYONE ever saying it would be EASY. I've seen some folks say it's IMPOSSIBLE... and some say its not. But I've never seen anyone say it was easy.

Have you?

I happen to think it's good that they're still looking. It shows that they have high standards and wouldn't settle for any old block.

The shooting starts in November, so we won't have to wait more then three months.

The Official Star Trek Convention at Las Vegas is a week and a half away. I don't think it's too far fetched to think that we may get some more movie news there. Perhaps they're doing a much better job of keeping the new Kirk casting a secret than they did with the new Spock.

I don't know if re-casting him is easy or not. Who out there looks the part, i don't know. I can't think of anyone which is what makes it exciting to see what they do. There is the look, but there is also the character, which up to this point Shatner has only done. I haven't seen any of the series with the guy who plays him which i guess is available online about the rest of there 5 year run. But how much of Kirk is the character of Kirk and how much is Shatner. It will be interesting to see how the new actor will do it, even if the movie might suck.

Dont worry Beyerstein, go back to sleep. This is all a dream.

Star Trek : The 29th Century Romulan war Timeship Captain Sulu sequel to Nemesis moving forward not looking back with some Borg in it* starts shooting next week.

Starring Patrick Stewart, George Takei & Wesley Snipes.

* Working title.

My sentiments exactly.

Or: maybe they found a half dozen guys so perfect that they're having a hell of a time choosing between them all.

If one is used to modern Trek movies, seeing the producers put extra effort into getting things like casting exactly right is probably a little unfamiliar.

To be fair, they never had to recast any main roles before. I think the closest they've had was Saavik, but she doesn't really count, since she wasn't from the television show. With both the TOS and TNG movies, the central cast was already set.

I think it's a wise decision to make sure that the casting is correct, especially since we fans are very picky. If this movie does take off, and Paramount decides to run with a television show, I think it would be wise to make sure that these characters work well together. They may end up being the cast of that show.

Didn't you hear? They've cast Jeffrey Combes as Kirk! And James Cromwell is actually going to be playing McCoy! And they're going to have Micheal Dorn play Scotty (in a new Klingon makeup that's not QUITE the same as the one he wore on TNG).

Just think, somewhere out there is a guy who doesn't yet realize he's the new Captain James T. Kirk.

can you please provide the quote where someone (especially some one related to the film) said Kirk would be 'easily recast'

Here is what Abrams said about recasting and Kirk:

The thing about casting Trek is how do you possibly top or even match the cast of The Original Series…and that is really where this film takes place. William Shatner…I have met him a number of times and he is the greatest. We are desperately trying to find a way to put him in this movie. The truth is: it needs to be worthy of him – it needs to be worthy of you – it needs to be worthy to the movie. We cannot just shove him in. It would be a disaster. You would hate it, he wouldn’t like it…it would be bad. So we are on that. And we are looking for a Kirk, cause that’s tough too. So Kirks?…any ideas for Kirks? We are taking Kirk names.

I read it a couple of times and I can't find the part where he said it would be easy...maybe with your keen insight you can see it
