IDW revisiting Mirror Universe

I found the FCBD issue on the Comixology website and it's a pre-order with a release date of the 31st.
So how important is that one to the story, would I be able to follow #1 without it?

I haven't found Prelude.

I read Issue 1, I like it

Picard doesn't feel that off from Prime Timeline Picard, just more ruthless. He is still calculating, patient. I like him. Data and Geordi so far seem similar to their Prime Universe counter parts as well. I love Geordi's response to the officer who asks how he sees through his visor, a little cliche but it made me smile

The FCBD issue is essentially backstory, about how someone ended up in Picard's inner circle. You can safely read issue #1 without it, and then circle back when it's released digitally.

Aren't they only free for the day? I mean, it's called "Free Comic Book Day," after all.

In this post I'm having a hard time telling if you actually expect them to change the name if they don't charge for leftover free comics the day after the event. You are absurdly literal when you're not lecturing other people for being absurdly literal.

I read the first issue and it annoyed me a bit, it's not that I didn't like it (What I've read so far is pretty cool) but it was just an incomplete part of a larger story, I'll wait until it's finished and read the complete thing.

Is this supposed to be in continuity with the DS9 mirror episodes? Because in those earth was conquered. In that case mirror broken takes place before crossover and will end with the alliance defeating the empire (picard and co. probably being on the run) ...
I hope it's its own continuity, I never liked how DS9 turned mirror humans into freedom fighters, that they were evil bastards was what made the mirror universe interesting.

From what I've read, the idea is that the Terran Empire has been conquered and effectively destroyed, but Picard is one of a few Imperials who are still hanging on in the fringes and refusing to admit defeat.

the only system left is Sol according to the comic.
The ways its written suggests Constantinople in the very last days of the Byzantine Empire, everything else has been lost but the city itself was just clinging on because it was to much trouble to take it by storm. Although its probably closer to the situation during the Arab conquests, the Alliance has broken the back of the already weakened Empire (much as the Arabs swept across the Eastern Roman Empire after it broke itself fighting Persia) but Earth itself is to heavily defended and to far away from their supply lines for them to be able to actually take it.

Assuming its 2364 then then the Alliance has probably had to sit on the massive former imperial territory's for about sixty years or so and given how quickly the rebellion got going in the DS9 episodes its grasp is probably quite shaky as it is. Assuming Starfleet pulled back everything it had left to try and hold onto Earth they could conceivably make life so miserable for the enemy that they could hold out for a very long time.

The Empire has its back to the wall but they clearly still have some resources left, notably the Mars shipyards, and its probably easier to defend a small area (Sol) since Trek-verse sensors can usually detect a fleet coming from rather a long way off. As such Starfleet can make harassing raids or intercept incoming assaults while being able to quickly retreat to its strong-points for repair and security.

One minor issue
The new Enterprise looks like the refit D from All Good things, that seems too advanced for the time and certainly for an Empire at the end of its rope. Wouldn't the E-E or a slightly more aggressive looking version of the D from the actual show make more sense?

Otherwise the series looks good so far, just a shame it can't be slotted into the same continuity as David Mack's brilliant novels (as its made very clear Earth was a slave world in the main novel-verse).

Oooo, thanks I'll have go grab it. I'll probably wait before I buy for issue #1 though, I already spent almost $40 on comics yesterday.

I picked up Issue 1 and 2 today, I haven't bought a comic book since the late 90's, but I saw these while looking around at a local Vintage Stock and figured why not because the Idea of a TNG mirrorverse intruged me, and the I.S.S. Stargazer looked kinda sweet on the cover. I won't spoil anything on the Story, but it's got twists and backstabbing like you'd expect, I think they do a good job with the charicters as believeable darker versions of themselves, the art work is pretty good too (There are a couple of wonky shots where a persons head is at an unnatural angle, It may be due to the blend of hand drawn/digital stuff the art style appears to be in) but it's still pretty good, being that it's only going to be a six issue series, I'm going to get all of them. I'll have to find the issue 0 that was given out on free comic day that I missed though....

I don't think there is any digital stuff in JK Woodward's art, I believe it's all hand painted.

That's correct. He does pencils first, then watercolors overtop his pencils. It's time consuming, which is why IDW brought in a penciller (Gordon Purcell) to work with Woodward on the Doctor Who crossover.

Thanks for the details, I just remembered him talking about the fact that he does everything by hand in an interview I read.

Just ordered the books, good read but very different from the Prime DS9 Mirror universe I thought all Terrans were slaves or something. Plus is there an in universe reason on how backwards Terrans managed to control an entire galaxy made up of telepaths and stronger species like Vulcans and Andorians? Good fun but a stretch for the imagination, more like the Andorians will be controlling the Terrans lol

It takes place in the "Prime" MU, it's just following some of the last members of the Empire that are still around.

IIRC, the Andorians are afforded some measure of respect in the Empire (because of their warrior skill) but telepaths of any species are feared and exterminated whenever possible. In fact I believe the Betazoids were almost completely wiped out for this exact reason.
