I wonder if it looks cheap on purpose

The trouble with the perception of future clothing in Who, and Blakes 7, is that half the time it looked fab, the other half it looked really embarassing, so I can understand why the producers opted for the "They look just like us" option a lot of the time. I would like to see them use their imaginations occasionally however...

Yep. People have been wearing jeans for a while now. And on any given day, an individual's clothing is likely to be fastened with some combination of laces, buttons, zippers, snaps and Velcro - one of those devices has been in use for thousands of years, and at least one for less than a century...

The clothing on Blake's 7 was mentioned. Time for me to repost this:

Yeah but a lot of the 'look' in B7 worked very well as futurustic versions of Medevial/Robin Hood style outfits.

The Federation Trooper look is pretty iconic now as well, not bad for some motorcyvle overalls and a gasmask!

I don't think there's any SF these days that puts humans into "futuristic" looking clothes because people know how stupid it looks. When's "Avatar" set? All the humans are wearing present day clothes in that.

I don't recall Kirk and Spock lounging around in jeans and t shirts on the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek last year..

While I think the days of silly hats is over, its nice at least when a show plays lip service to creating a look that isn't quite of the now. I always found it kind jarring in NuBSG that everyone just dressed like us.

no they were wearing the provided Star Fleet uniform.

A star ship is not the best way to judge the culture of its time, in the same way that if an alien based its views of humanity on a submarine crew, it would be mistake.

Not to mention the fact that Kirk is clearly dressed in Jeans, a t-shirt, and leather jacket before he joins Starfleet.

^I realise that, but the Star fleet uniforms weren't retconned as horrible janitors' overalls like they were in Enterrprise. I'm not suggesting silver jumpsuits or extravagant hats, but something to suggest this isn't 2010 is nice, even if all you do is take something from the past and make it look hip again in the future.

and maybe future fashions should look silly/shocking? I mean if you took someone from 1890 and plaonked them in 1927 they'd be outraged, take someone from the 50s and show them 70's fashions etc.

Same with the guns, the guys in Utopia were running around with AKs for crying out loud! I know the Kalashnikov is a classic design but this is the end of the universe we're talking about here

Bingo! :)

Jeans and t-shirts are comfortable and practical, they can be made cheaply and are still resilient. Stupid spandex jumpsuits with no pockets and silly shiny fabrics and head gear are always a function of the time they were created in and do nothing but date the production.

Yeah, Utopia is one of the worst offenders. Generally, anything set millions of years in the future is going to have this problem.

I mean, nevermind that humankind should have evolved into something altogether different than what it is today, they could at least bother to get some of it right - there shouldn't be any material thing that is exactly like it's present-day counterpart. No 44 gallon drums or wire fences, kalishnakovs or landrovers please. Is it really that much to ask?

It's set in 2154.

Pretty much - another reason I roll my eyes whenever the Timelords show up.

We've seen other Time Lords dress more normally. I take their robes and headgear to be ceremonial dress.

They did, several times, as it explicitly says in the episode before falling back again to a more primitive state.

I wouldn't say they looked "cheap," but the last three specials did feel a bit small in scale compared to what we were used to before.

Of course if you spaced out the regular season episodes the same way, they'd probably look a lot more underwhelming too...

I must have missed that. All I got was the "Futurekind" business, which if that was their idea of evolution/devolution over 100 trillion years (sticking a set of comedy teeth and some war paint on a few luvvies) then it's a little on the inadequate side.
