I wonder how homosexuals feel about...

"That's gay!"

That seems to be the new popular insult. Are you around teens a lot? Anything that happens that they think is in anyway questionable is addressed as, "dude, that's gay!"

Man, that shirt's gay.
Those shoes are fucking gay!

Anytime anyone does something to someone that he doesn't like, "Dude, he's fucking gay."

That's gay.
You're fucking gay.
That's some gayass bullshit.

Everything is gay.

I'm not gay, and it really offends me.

I didn't think it was a new. It's been around for ages : /

By "new" I don't mean "this season". I mean the last several years.

10 years ago, "that's gay" wasn't the response to ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING! the way I hear it today.

When I was in HS, we actually reserved "that's gay" for things that seemed homosexual.

These days, the HS kicker misses a PAT? That's fucking gay!

Yeah really...this has been around...nothing new here. I've used "that's gay" in front of gay friends....they know what I (really) mean.

I think you might have missed the boat. I feel like "That's gay" is actually on its way out.

I'm outta high school 20yrs now and "that's gay" was used for more things that had nothing to do with homosexuality at all.

I think it's a mindless colloquialism that most people don't even think about, and probably intend no harm by using. But I don't use it myself.

I feel about it the same way I feel about teenage boys who use femininity as an insult.... You know, because being less than manly is somehow an insult of the highest order.

Because being female is bad, right?

Apparently so is being gay. Nevermind that a lot of male peer bonding is actually pretty homoerotic. ;)

Because being female is bad, right?
No, but being a dude and being called a woman is. Like a woman being called a dude would also be insulting.

Not even close.

To say "she's as strong as a man" is not an insult.
No, but if you're calling someone "strong" in order to make fun of them, you need to work on your insults.

But to tell a girl "You're hairy like a man" would probably be insulting.

Because being female is bad, right?
No, but being a dude and being called a woman is. Like a woman being called a dude would also be insulting.
Bullshit. A woman who behaves in traditionally masculine ways isn't generally criticized. Women are judged far more harshly on appearance as opposed to behavior, and that is where the "dude" comment frequently comes from.

Men, on the other hand, are judged base on behavior. If they fail to meet certain behavioral norms they're referred to as feminine or gay, both of which are fully intended as insults. That says quite a bit about what some men think about homosexuality and femininity. They're seen as weak.

So woman are insulted if they look like men, and men are insulted if they behave like women. Who cares?

Great point. A woman who likes monster trucks is adored by men (as long as she's hot). Now, how do those same men treat a guy who likes ballet?

Since "looks" are something you are born with and "behavior" is something you choose, I see a vast difference.
