I watched the 1981 movie Nighthawks

I suppose Roddenberry approved Grace Lee Whitney's lack of make up, but approved it for Nichelle Nichols?

It was Robert Wise who nixed Grace's makeup in TMP. He said that "Kirk's geisha girl had no place on the Enterprise". Supposedly he was still smarting from a practical joke GR and Grace played on Wise on his first day at the studio. (Grace pretended to be his new gum chewin' bimbo secretary.)

I know, I was messing with Christopher a little bit.

Reggie Nalder. Loved his accent. He also played a blue vampire, Mr Barlow, in the TV mini-series of "Salem's Lot".

His unusual look was due to a large facial scar from burns suffered in a fire as a young man.

Yeah, he's definitely a character I would've liked to have seen again. His look, his accent, it was perfect.

Isn't it interesting when a background character makes such an impact?

If I recall correctly (I'd have to check, and I don't want to), in my first edition version of "The World of Star Trek" David Gerrold called it the "Theiss Titillation Principle". Somehow this got changed to 'theory', but that's okay. It's the same basic idea.

She was indeed incredibly beautiful. Her lack of experience does show through though, especially as she probably has the most difficult role to play in TMP. If not for the proto-Transformers voice alteration (and forget all the "v'Ger was altered by the Borg!" theories, the Planet of the Machines is clearly Cybertron ;) ) the deeply sensual but holding it back Ilia and the cold and emotionles but with an emerging trace of humanity coming back to the surface probe don't feel nearly as different as they should and the journey the later goes on in particular isn't very well conveyed.

That's not her fault and she does the best she can considering her lack of acting experience (and Return to Tomorrow shows some of the stress she was under, the infamous 14 takes to say "No" was down to nerves rather than her really being that bad. Plus Roddenbery's keenness for her to do the sonic shower scene naked and the huge hoops she had to jump through to avoid that seems to have taken up a lot of time that might otherwise have been spent on developing the character), it's the result of a production team casting for looks first and foremost over ability to play the role/s.

By the way, I just watched the 1993 pilot of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman last night, and I'd forgotten that Persis Khambatta has a small role in that as the chairperson of the UN-like Congress of Nations. It was her second-last role.
