I was content with Picard's series finale

Jonathan Frakes definitely grew up to be a good actor — which is funny in a way, since back in 1987 I thought he was terrible. It’s not the first time I’ve seen an actor get so much better as they grow older, which stands to reason — more acting experience and more life experience.
Now, c'mon. Has any acting performance ever been better than Jonathan Frakes as Jamie Lee Hogg?1778890394295.png

As I continue my rewatch, my appreciation for the character stuff continues to grow. In particular, with Frakes as Riker.

Season three of Picard trashed the characters. In my humble opinion, of course. Back in season one, "Nepenthe" gave us some of Riker and Troi's best moments ever. In season three, Riker and Troi basically said, remember that time we made pizza? Were we morons or what?

Beverly Crusher wants her son to be safe. So she takes him outside of the protection of the Federation and makes him a smuggler and criminal. Meanwhile, Picard luxuriates at his blissful and comfortable place in France, not at all threatened by whatever the hell Bev was so worried about that she had to keep her kid and her life a secret.

Data gets some great moments in season one. Forget about that, let's have fanwank data instead.

We get to see past characters like Ro Laren just long enough for them to be killed off.

I guess different people have different ideas about character stuff.

Honestly, we already had several variations of Picard and Ro reuniting in the various tie-ins over the years, the only real difference here was that it actually involved Patrick Stewart and Michelle Forbes and was canon.

I was very satisfied with how the characters were handled in season 3 and find nothing objectionable about it. On the other hand, I think season 1 is a crime against humanity and should be transferred to old flammable nitrate film stock so that it will be sure to be destroyed.

So, yes, I agree that people have different ideas about character stuff.

I take issue with the character assassination of Beverly Crusher.

Not that she was ever much of a character to begin with.

The handling of Beverly and her relationship with Picard was very strange and seemed extremely out of character.

Picard and Riker trying to sneak on board the ship was just odd but not sure if I'd call it out of character or just poorly done.

Ro and Shelby and Tuvok all feel kind of mishandled but that's not the character work but just writing that seems to treat them as disposable.

Shaw is a very poor character and doesn't fit at all.

Yeah, the character stuff is mixed for me.

That's the thing. Character assassination actually made her do something which was kind of memorable. Considering the only other memorable thing she's done is fuck a candle, well...

Agreed on both counts. The sad truth is, she's a character no one seems to know what to do with. Even the novels struggled to the point they just introduced another medical officer on the Enterprise E even though she was still there anyway. And that character has even "graduated" to the new novel continuity.

Nick Meyer nearly made the same mistake with Carol Marcus in Star Trek II, but thankfully the studio told him to rewrite it so that Kirk knew about David, but she asked him to leave.
