I wouldn't mind reading a Lost Era type book that sees Tasha before the launch of the Enterprise-D. According to memory beta, Tasha was born in 2337 and started at the academy in 2355. Also according to memory beta, Troi started at the academy in '55. At this point Riker and Laforge had been at the academy for two years, so it is quite possible that Riker or Troi, or both, had known her previous to their assignment aboard the E-D.
I don't think it was ever stated on screen, but I haven't watched those first season TNG episodes much, and not for at least 5 years. Please correct me if i'm in error...it may have been stated on screen that Riker and Troi definetly met her for the first time on the Enterprise, but if it did, I don't recall.

Just because they were in the academy at the same time, doesn't mean they know each other. I don't know everyone in my final year engineering class and there were only 35 of us, let alone the 150 in first year. and that's just a particular branch in engineering. Troi and Yar had vastly different disciplines.
I just got the first two seasons of TNG on DVD, and they never really made any references to whether or not any of the characters (other than Picard & Beverly, and Will & Deanna) knew each other before they came on the Enterprise. At least no obvious ones that I caught, I do tend to miss stuff on occasion.
