I want Khan.

I really think a remake of "Space Seed" is one the most unoriginal directions to go in. If they absolutely must remake that episode, I think they really ought to make it different. Have this Khan be a descendent of the original and perhaps have him be a fellow Starfleet captain.

He could still be a baddie, but maybe not one bent on mass destruction like the villians in the last two Trek movies. He could be someone who thinks Kirk shouldn't be captain of the Enterprise and is out "to get him" from within the Starfleet system. In the meantime, there could be something else brewing elsewhere in the Galaxy that's even worse...

I'm still not in favour of Khan as the villain. However, I did see someone speculate that Khan could have been wakened earlier in this new timeline by the Klingons or the like. I remember in the Shatnerverse Mirror Universe novels the mirror Picard was a sort of Klingon regent. The suggestion of Khan leading a Klingon house or even empire does appeal to me.

I think beyond the basics it'll be a totally different tale. I hope.
If they're going with the idea of Khan as a genetically bred superman from an earlier time, the differences will be cosmetic ones, IMO. Just different settings for Kirk and Khan to eventually duke it out one-on-one in the end.

This is actually more along the lines of what I was thinking. There would also be potential to weave the Augments into the story somehow along with the two Klingon "races."

No where in my OP did I say anything about recreating "Space Seed" or TWOK. The theme of my post was that the character had so much unused potential mostly due to the two mediocre and short-sighted stories he was showcased in.

And, obviously, you could just as well write a story for any fill-in-the-blank villain, but the whole point is Bad Robot is presented the opportunity to reuse a character who's already a household name. Can't create that kind of PR overnight. For example, if it weren't for the legal restrictions, I think it's pretty clear that Broccoli/Wilson would have use SPECTRE instead of Quantum with Craig-Bond.

But I don't want him to just be content with unleashing destruction. That always seemed beneath him to me. I always pictured him as seeing himself as another Caesar or Hitler. (Per what he does in WWIII.) He prides himself on always being five steps ahead of his advisories while he insidiously manipulates people to do anything he wants.

And suddenly he wakes up in the 23 century with a whole galaxy to play with. You think he's actually going to just settle for a single space ship? Even if it was meant to be a means to an end, if he's really as brilliant as he's supposed to be, he'd still be way ahead of the game.

I've also always wondered why he was frozen in the first place. I doubt the WWIII age was above capital punishment yet.

One thing I came up with once is he had devised a biological weapon of some kind and he and followers where the delivery vehicle. Like just being around them exposed one to the virus or whatever, but it would be released en masse if the host was killed. This would have huge suicide attack potential.

Most folks said the same thing about Kirk and Spock and McCoy, and I was entirely happy with the casting job they did.

Let's face it, once you recast Kirk no one else in Trek is really a challenge.

True, that. Also, if you cast Khan based on the Khan of "Space Seed", it should be a little easier to find someone suitable than casting for TWOK Khan. In TWOK, Montalban danced the manaical Khan deftly on the edge of chewing the scenery. It would have been so easy to fall into camp, but he was powerful and believable, instead. It would take a certain type of actor to play the character that way. The whole movie could even hinge on whether people would say he was "at least as good."

But for a younger Khan, there must be plenty of candidates who can play someone who is egotistical, self-assured, handsome, suave, has a great intellect, and is a bit dangerous (except for that last one, that sounds like Kirk, actually). Then, just remind the actor what Khan is capable of becoming (as seen in TWOK), and let him work with that in the new story as needed.

Hard, but not impossible.

I do NOT want Khan.

Doing a Khan story as the second adventure out of the gate reeks of desperation - we got nothing original so lets do Khan.

If we do get Khan, I want my Star Trek Plot punch card at the cinema - 5 revenge plots in a row and the 6th is free!

Yeah, something tells me these writers won't be showing the kind of restraint that TWOK showed, where Kirk and Khan never even met face to face.

Wait, Space Seed and TWOK were mediocre? Um, okaaaay...

Well geez, if those aren't considered good, then there's no such thing as a good TOS episode or movie then.

I'm actually warming up to the idea of Khan.

There's no reason his story, as told in this incarnation of Trek, can't be fantastic. I think there's some pretty great source material to work with to make this something worthwhile.

Khan's also the best bet for the studio to make some money on this film, thus ensuring us of more Trek in the future. Amazing how people forget how dim the future of Trek looked after the abortion that was Enterprise and the complete lack of success Nemesis had.

Haters gonna hate, whiners gonna whine I guess.

This is surprising to me, all the negative reactions to Khan possibly being the villian. I've always believe Space Seed was amongst the favorite of episodes,a nd the WoK was amongst the top 2 or 3 favorites of the movies?

Since the Universe has been rebooted, they can pretty much go anywhere with Khan, so, even if we knew for a fact that Khan was the villian, we wouldn't know anything else, as they may go a completely different direction than what we know of Khan in Canon.

I like TWOK very much...probably my second favorite film. I like Space Seed probably a little more.

That doesn't mean I want to see Khan again more than I want to see this crew continue what they started in the first film --- going in their own direction.

Get a villain for this group. One with his own backstory and motivations for conflict. Make him cool too. Let them have their own stories.

Why invite the comparisons in the first place? They can make an awesome film without Khan, and they'll actually get more credit for doing that.

I like Khan too so I can understand if people just want to see the character again, but if they're going to go in a completely new direction and change everything about him.....why not just rename the character and give us something novel?
