Rest assured, in an alternate timeline, I'm sure he's busily working away at Trek, but it looks like our timeline with have to go without.

Maybe he is giving us a Christmas gift. Wake up to open gifts only to see Santy has left a surprise tweet on everyones phone saying "Beam me up Trekkies! I am all in and I am not playing any raindeer games when I say this." Jason

And Paramount absolutely should.
The studio is struggling and the remerger is only a stopgap. As long as whatever QT is asking for is within reasonable industry standards, Paramount would have to be absolutely idiotic not to give it to him.

I hate to say it, but...
Honestly, everything I read about his trek made me feel like they were just trolling everyone or something. I legit imagined them all laughing behind the scenes.
His name is surely useful to keep trek in the news, one way or another, while they figure out who will make the actual movie.
That said, a part of me wants to see how crazy it could be. Maybe a spin off, make me see what he can do ..with original characters I don't care about.

It's dead until he and Paramount ressurect it - much like JJ Trek 4. 
At this point I don't think Tarantino cares that much for money and is truly into for the art and crafting his legacy. He could have sold out years ago and did a Transformers movie or something if he only cared about. A guy is basically the definitive cliche of a film nerd. Jason
