I think my girlfriend is a Christian! Advice needed.

A celibate Squiggy might be a very angry Squiggy. Let us not tempt the Fates.

He might be like Elaine in "Seinfeld" and get dumber the more he doesn't have sex.

Woah, she did nudity in Contraband? Why did no one tell me! I was boycotting that because of what Mark Wallberg said about 911, but I'll have to see it now.

No nudity, but she does look better. It's also a better movie overall.

That's what's happening with what I call "dawkinsism" - atheists who don't just sit in their homes and think God may not exist after all (I can sympathise with those), atheists who proclaim that all religion must be abolished - which a statement as strong and foolish as "all religion but Christianity must be abolished". I mean people who actively pursue destruction of all religion, and actively step on my toes to butt their agenda into my life.

Where are these Dawkins loving atheists that call for the abolishing of all religions? I'm sure someone, somewhere has called for this (probably in a youtube comment) but I'm not seeing an active movement with this agenda.

Evidently you're not getting the newsletter. ;)

Hmm
If militant atheists are not killing people yet it's either because it's "yet", or because it will go out of fashion before it gets out of control.

I hope atheists killing the religious folks of the world will go out of fashion too. Or else, the future looks bleak. It's going to be the billions of Christians and Muslims vs who knows how many atheists. That's why the Iranians are training female ninjas. They will be the elite strike force to oppose the coming atheist oppression

The OP was so odd...you guys yelled at each other in the hallway from time to time till you realized there was sexual attraction??

RAMA

It wasn't all shouting, that was just the first time. It was mostly just ambiguous glances and gestures after that. It could have gone either way but thankfully it ended with mutual attraction!

As for the deal with Underworld, first of all that movie mostly sucked and Kate Beckinsale's physical attributes can be better appreciated in other movies most recently "Contraband."

So being a Christian is automatically an evil thing, how ironic.

No one said evil. Only a small number of Christians are evil. Maybe only 15%. It's just that I wouldn't be able to respect her beliefs, knowing what I know. Maybe if she let me explain everything to her and then if after that she was still able to come up with a convincing argument for why she's a Christian it could be okay with us. I don't know, it's an option to consider. But she'd have to be very convincing.

Anyway, I didn't have any classes today so I didn't see her, but I text messaged her from work. I asked her what was up. She text back asking if I wanted to help her at the church again tomorrow. With everything weighing on my mind, I almost came out and asked her if she was a Christian via text, but I deleted it at the last moment as I thought maybe it wasn't the best way to do it. Instead, in answer to her question of if I want to come to help her tomorrow, I texted "if you BELIEVE I should I will!" I thought that was quite good. But she just texted back that I was "being weird." So I had to end up just texting "okay, I'll help you tomorrow."

I definitely think I'll confront her tomorrow at the church! Thanks for all the advice, it helps having people to talk to.

Here's why I say what I say. You speak of Christians as if it's inherently a bad thing. You sound like Kirk in TUC, "those damn Klingons, ahrr." Don't get me wrong, I'm not religious, I have a belief in something, but it's definitely not tied to any one religion. I was raised Southern Baptist, but I haven't been to church in probably twenty years. I believe in evolution, I believe in global warming, I believe in science, but that doesn't stop me from believing that perhaps there is still something more to it than what science can provide. Maybe I just choose to "have faith" because it makes me feel better about our meaningless existence.

I completely understand how you may be hesitant to date a girl who is very much different than you. I would hesitate to date certain types of Christians, but not Christians in a general term. I have cousins who don't drink and don't believe a woman can be a minister, preacher or priest, don't support gay rights, are anti-abortion, ect... I could not be with a person who has those beliefs, not because they are Christian, but because of the type of Christian they are. That goes for every religion.

What really gets me is it is precisely because she is a Christian that you are putting her on a lower level as if Christians are sub-human or something. This is akin to people saying, *whispers* "he's dating a black girl," as if there is something inherently wrong with that. That's the way it reads to me.

The last thing that bothers me is what you "know" to be true. As I said, I believe in evolution, but what people "know" can get you into trouble and create conflict, trust me I've been there. Why worry about what you know, I'm not sure that there are a whole lot of Universal truths in this world. What we "know" can and does change all of the time. Why can't you respect her beliefs and have your own belief as well? You can still know what you know and she can know what she knows and you too can still get along just fine. I respect all beliefs whether I agree with them or not. Being religious doesn't mean you can't be scientific minded and believe in science. Being a scientist doesn't mean you have to atheist. Some of the greatest minds were raised on Christian beliefs. Not one President has ever claimed to not believe in some sort of higher power.

It seems to me that you are blowing a perfectly good opportunity, but if you cant get past the religion, then you shouldn't peruse this any further. The problem is, you have a problem with her that she's unaware of and she doesn't have a problem with you, yet. This needs to be resolved in order for you to go foreword.

That's the documented basis. I will only add virtually all atheists I met - but one or two - were of this sort, yelling at me for being "religious" (I'm not, merely agnostic and skeptical towards this evangelical atheism).

That article says nothing about abolishing anything, just countering and criticising its influence with rational arguments. If I am comfortable with a belief, I have no problem defending it against criticism.

I find it amusing how many people proclaim that every atheist they have met has been an asshole. Of course, I am sure all atheists declare their atheism to everybody they meet at the first opportunity, it's not possible you could have met lots of atheists and not even known it.

I can honestly say every asshole I've met has been an asshole.

Atheists don't need to declare their atheism; their demonic wings and forked tongues do it for them.

...unless they're gay.

I really hate to be judgemental, but I admit there is a stereotype of Atheists maybe not being assholes, but being way high on a high horse, or ironically, holier than thou. Even on this board and in this thread I've read stuff saying Christians are evil, or religion is evil and I have to ask why lump everyone who is a christian into that group. Actually, the people I hate more than those kind of atheists are the religious nuts who think everyone should follow them.

I don't want to hate Atheists, as I'm sure they are good people, but it seems to me the those who are actually respectful of other's beliefs (Not tolerant or agreeable, but respectful) are few and far between.

Do you really hate to be a complete hypocrite as well?

How am I a hypocrite again?

"Almost all atheists think almost all Christians are evil, how wrong of them to generalise like that! I know it's true because I saw some nasty atheists on a message board!"

Give me a break

That isn't what I said at all.

Also, it works both ways. Because of some religious nuts, all Christians are evil, according to some of the replies in this very thread. Please.
