I refuse to watch Trek remastered

It'd be nice to ask, if we could, some of those who worked on the original effects to see what they thought. That would settle the question of whether they see these as insults of a sort, or more "that's how we'd have done it if we had those tools".

Actually, I think EVERY new format is a scam. Some of you haven't had to replace everything you bought on Betamax three times over yet.

I must admit that I didn't buy TOS in Betamax, but I did get most of them in VHS. Years later, I picked them up in DVD. I will get TOS Remastered, when it comes out.

In each case, newer technology resulted in a superior product, so I don't mind spending the money, assuming the price is reasonable. Note that I haven't bought every single version, but I do buy stuff when someone puts out an affordable product that appeals to me. TOS-R definitely appeals to me.

I really do wish that they had fixed that stupid, fake cyclorama sky in "Fridays Child", however.

I hear you on that one Forbin. Moving up is painful...and expensive. But like NCC621 I've always enjoyed the improvement in technology.

I refuse. I really don't see why people would want to even watch this. Just wait, they'll probabally release this on DVD to try and scam more money from us.

I'll bet in ten or fifteen years time, when HD TV has spoilt you, you'll eventually find less and less reasons to pull out your old TOS DVDs, and you'll find yourself watching anything else, so long as it's in HD.

While it's likely people will pull things out to showcase a system, it's unlikely we'll be doing that with HD in that time. The implication we'll be ignoring old material as it isn't HD...

I did buy some DVDs, when they first came out, to showcase my 5.1 surround system. But if it were all about the preferential format, no one would watch "Lost in Space" or "Twilight Zone"... and they do... in droves. Despite the technological beast the USA is, retro is very, very popular, and always has been.

Colourisation didn't take. Old movies are better in B&W, if made that way. TOS is fine without the effects. I won't be watching 'something' else, simply because it's HD.

^ I can't watch Laural & Hardy's, March of The Wooden Soldiers in it's original b&W, because I'm used to seeing the colorized version every Thanksgiving on WPIX, NY.

Thanks for letting us know.

I guess they are just not as enlightened as you are.

I have a feeling that you will not fall for this dastardly scam.

I'm doing one better ;)

1. Watching it for free, hey it's Syndi not like I'm paying for it anyway, less that's part of my cable bill.

2. Recording it to VHS for free, well, I do have to buy blank VHS tapes but they're like uber cheap nowadays.

3. Never buying the DVD sets, I got TOS on DVD already, no real reason to get it again yanno, less HDTV's come way way way down in price, they're still out of my budget range.

Woulfe
* Who's enjoying the heck out of TOS-E *

I'm not against the idea of replacing the TOS effects. I'm just mildly disappointed with the results because, frankly, it looks like it was done on the cheap.

In 5 or 10 years, I won't be surprised at all if people are clamoring for Paramount to do it once again and replace the replacements using still-newer technology.

But in the meantime, it's sort of silly for people to self-rightously proclaim that they refuse to watch it on some sort of moral ground. I mean, c'mon.

Oh, I think it's the perfect analogy!
You won't mind if I steal it, of course? :D

By all means, steal away. :)

Who was it who compared people who wouldn't watch TOS without upgraded effects with people who wouldn't read books without pictures? 'Cause I wanna steal that one. :D

It's not morals per se.

I realize and respect you're a hardcore purist...and I sympathize with and honor that. But let's face it. This was going to happen sooner or later anyways with Viacom/Paramount trying to tie all the different series and movies together more closely, and the old late '60s effects have been a topic of discussion for alteration/improvement for years now. With ENTERPRISE having been canceled, NEMESIS bombing in the theaters over four years ago and no new show or movie due for at least another year or two, revised and remastered TOS is better than nothing. And it's not bad at all.

I find it humorous that the same people who say that "TOS has always been about the STORY and the CHARACTERS" ... now refuse to watch TOS:R because of some new effects.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who have caught that. The story and characters are still there, but now with cleaner images and new special effects.

This just makes it possible for people turned off by some of the worst effects to look past them and enjoy what (supposedly) those speaking up the loudest enjoyed about the original series.

And, last I checked, you can buy the originals on DVD sets quite easily... so what's the bitching about?

I'm not trying to be a contrarian, but those two ideas aren't mutually exclusive. Its possible to believe that TOS IS about the story and character and yet hold to the idea that we ought to respect the history of the show.
