I refuse to watch Trek remastered

Surak said:
I refuse. I really don't see why people would want to even watch this. Just wait, they'll probabally release this on DVD to try and scam more money from us.

OK--Have a nice day.

I have yet to see one. I don't even know when they show them in the Houston market, but it would be after hours sometime. I don't have anything against redoing the FX, but I already have the original on DVD and am not going to spend one cent just to see a few inserted cgi shots.

I don't watch because we don't have digital cable yet (and won't until it's forced on us) and that's the only way to get it where we live.

My mom (83 in March!) says it looks great in HD (which we don't have yet, either....Mom is pretty high tech!) and loves it. This from someone who was there with me and sis in September 1966 when TOS premiered. The three of us watched the entire TOS first run! Dad sneered at it and never developed a taste for it.

I'd like to think he'd have liked TNG (he died in 1986), as Picard was also bald! Ha, ha, ha!

They probably will release it on DVD, but how is that scamming us for more money? The TV broadcasts are free :)

Refusing to watch on principle is moronic. I watch simply out of curiosity to see what they did and it makes me look forward to watching TOS as much as it did when I saw it for the first time. Why would anyone deny themselves the opportunity?? Of course if you see it and you hate it, that's one thing, but sticking your head in the sand on the sheer principle of it is ignorance at its finest. Unfortunately that attitude is so prevalent in this neck of the woods.

sigh..well, having watched tos since it first aired in Bedrock I've gotta say I'm enjoying the updated fx..

There's nothing wrong with one wishing to keep intact the memories of a thing he or she has loved for many years. It is no more "sticking your head in the sand" for someone to avoid TOS-R than it is for him to decline to examine his 60 year-old mother's brand-new boob job.

that's what i call 'elitism'. i got it over after a while. it was deeply stressing caring so much about the "pure", "best" things and not let go to new horizons.

I have previously complained loudly about TOS-R, and to be honest I still do not like the idea of it, but I am watching the episodes each week. I still consider the original episodes the "Gold Standard" and when I want to watch TOS I watch my DVD's, but at the end of the day I want to see what they are doing to the shows.

Look, when Professor Moriarity redid "The Doomsday Machine" I watched that and thought it was great, although I really liked the fact that a fan was doing it. I certainly have no great love for the corporate folks at CBS and for what they are doing on a global scale, but this is a big thing in the world of Star Trek and I want to see how they do it.

I think that, for the most part, the changes do not really make the shows better or worse. The ONLY thing I really like about TOS-R is that it makes me feel like TOS will be more available in the future after HD becomes more popular. It helps keep Trek in general, and TOS specifically, alive.

Thanks for sharing. Let me share I don't care about your TV watching habits. I have to ask: why did you start a thread that is specifically about you?

I'm not trying to stir up trouble either
You start a thread titled "I refuse to watch Trek remastered" and then claim you are not trying to stir up trouble? I say bullshit.

and frankly you look old fashioned.

 I'm 21.
It's unfortunate you are so close minded for somebody so young. When I was 21, I was actively searching out new experiences, tasting the various dishes that are laid out on the vast buffet of life, finding what I liked and disliked. I agree with apostle. You may be young in years but you are very old in you mind.

I don't agree with some of what TOS-R is trying to do but at least I'm open minded to the changes.

I'm going to shut up now. I am treading perilously close to violating the board rule of "discuss the post, not the poster", if I haven't crossed the line already, and I don't want my first warning on the board to be over something as trivial as your TV watching habits and your ability to handle change. My only excuse is both are subjects of your thread. You brought them up. I'd rather post in a caption thread anyway. Joe has already given us a sneak peek at his next picture and I can hardly wait. :p

Just give it a try......It might be very good....who knows...until you see it for yourself. :vulcan:

Unless Paramount/CBS tracks down, seizes and destroys all the original episode dvd's, then whats the problem? People should be able to enjoy whichever version they please.

I honestly don't understand all the fuss. I enjoy the remastered episodes. Stories are the same, its just that the visuals are a bit prettier.

IMO, they haven't done enough remastering to the shows to make them worth watching over the originals.

Sure, the new shots of the ship look nice. Quite often in the original, it seems as if the ship is black and white with a couple colored lights on it.

But I don't bother to track it down whenever and wherever it's on in my area because, IMO, not enough was changed/improved.

Another problem is while they have remastered effects, they have cut scenes and dialogue to get the eps to fit in the time alloted now considering the increased commercial time. So you get new effects, but lose scenes. I'd rather see them uncut as they aired on the DVD sets I own.

When I was 21, I honored and respected the past. It can be done.

I figured that there were others who felt the same way. Sorry if this topic has been beaten to death; I havn't posted here in a long time. In fact I honestly didn't know that they were redoing the FX until very recently. I guess I don't check TrekToday every day anymore either...

Worse, cuts to live action scenes sometimes butcher classic moments.

*Screams*

Can we make a sticky to the effect that the cuts for time are a totally separate phenomena from the remastering? Please?

I know it's petty of me, but that made me laugh. I'm saving it for future use. I wish it had been Kirk, not Picard though.

Back on topic. I like the remastered episodes, what few I've seen (it airs at 6 A.M. here  and I always forget to set my VCR.) I probably won't buy this on DVD, as I already invested in the TOS dvds a few years back, and they're sufficient.

But I see no harm in the remastering. If one likes it, great. If not, back to the original shows. No one loses.
