I really like Voyager

TheLonelySquire

Vice Admiral
I don't post here much because I'm a TOS guy mainly. However, I've really come to like Voyager this past year.

TNG is boring and sterile and DS9 is like watching paint dry. Just wanted to lend my support to this forum and if anyone has particularly favorite episodes to watch, let me know and I'll look for them.

Thanks.

I like it, too! I didn't really, when it was on, but I took the plunge with the Amazon sale in April. I worked my way through, season by season, and now I'm a fan!

One way to look for great eps is to look back a few pages and find all the top ep polls by season--you could see which five got voted as best per season. They're all kind of handy right now--within the last 2 months.

Welcome to the Voyager fan forum then,TheLonelySquire! I was a fan when it started on UPN a long time ago and have been a fan ever since. Today, I received Season 4 of the DVD set in the mail and am now watching Year of Hell Part II. I have forgotten how great this episode was..even though it never really happened in the end, it still was a very exciting episode for me. :) Do you have a favorite character yet?? Or do you like everyone?? Personally, I love the whole cast but if I did choose, it would be Chakotay. He's hotter than a two dollar pistol!!!!! :guffaw:! Anyway, Year of Hell was a good time episode. :) Time travelling eps of Voy really gave me a headache. But this one was really good. And Kurtwood Smith was good in it too..he played Annorax I think, if I'm not mistaken.

Hey TLS, I didn't know you ever left TNZ.

My personal favorites are the emotional type episodes.

Real Life
Latent Image
Raven
Drone
Child's Play
Once Upon A Time
Barge of the Dead
Counterpoint
Prey

If you ignore the stupid plot in theory and execution of Year of Hell the rest of Voyager is great.
(I always preferd Futures End for time travel)

Equanox I and II and Message in a Bottle are among the best, but watch it start to finish dont skip over, its worth it.

I have the Borg Collection and Time Travel Collection so I've seen YOH several times. I really liked it and Kurtwood has been a Trek favorite of mine since he played the Federation Prez in TUC.

Endgame was great and I'm looking forward to getting the seasons on dvd in the near future.

As far as a favorite character I'd have to say Tuvok. Tim Russ does an outstanding job with the character. I think they're all solid and I expect to develop better opinions on each of them as I work my way through the series.

Now, I have a TOS bathroom (very classy!) in my man cave. And while I would never change it out for Voyager, I'm really into this show.

Hey Ex, now is THAT fair? ;)

You should check out my Trek Pasta Night thread sometime in TOS. It's a winner!

Thanks for the input. On your list above I have seen Drone and Raven and liked them both.

Thanks.

Thanks Phoenix-

I'll be sure to watch those eps in that order.

I don't think a lot of people real like Voyager at first, but usually the second time around they really see something special in it. It was like that for me, the second time around I was hooked, something dragged me in and kept me endlessly interested!

I thought Voyager was great from day one, and I watched Caretaker on its initial airing ready to dislike the show. While I agree that the writers lost track of the underlying premise of the program as the seasons progressed (the "lost in space" element), many of the episodes are compelling and deal with interesting social issues in spite of that. And, IMHO, the cast was simply stellar. There wasn't a bad actor in the bunch.

I think the two biggest problems Voyager faced was its competition with the syndicated DS9 (so that DS9 fans thought they simply HAD to hate the series) and the resentment many people feel toward having a woman in the center seat. And, really, I think the writers struggled with what a female captain would be like for the most part.

For some fans, she just couldn't win--and I'm convinced that many of the criticisms directed at the character (especially that she was bipolar or inconsistent) come from listening to what others have said rather than a close watching of the episodes. When she felt guilty and brooded, she was labeled psychotic; when she cared about her crew, she was labeled maternal; when she took action, she was labeled a loose cannon; when she reacted differently to varied situations, she was inconsistent. In fact, she is quite a good captain with elements of both Kirk (shooting from the hip) and Picard (preference for diplomatic solutions to problems) evident in her decisions and her attitude.

I do think the EMH and 7/9 were overused in the last couple of seasons to the detriment of other characters, but that is probably because those characters are easier to write for and because attention was being diverted to the "wonderful" upcoming Enterprise rather than continuing to develop the Voyager characters. Ugh.

But, Voyager is my all-time favorite Star Trek, closely followed by TOS. IMHO, Janeway has most of the honorable qualities seen in SF captains, and their situation (out beyond explored space) is very much like what we saw in TOS. What's not to like about that?

Welcome to the forum. My favorite episodes are:

Resistance
Death Wish
Meld

Enjoy! :)

After recently watching it all on dvd, Janeway is now my favorite Captain in modern Trek (I don't believe in really comparing the 60s show with the shows from the 90s+). I agree with the above comment that she had it all--action and diplomacy. Mulgrew did a great job just with body language--she really seemed like a captain to me, and she dominated the bridge completely, perhaps better than any of the Captains, including Kirk.

Latent Image was good but it didn't have an ending, it just stopped suddenly.
Then you didn't pay attention to the final words spoken and there meaning.

I don't consider a random quote from a book captable of suddenly erasing his guilt and resolving the situation.
Erasing, no but moving past it, yes.

As the quote said: "So starts the first day of a new life."

It was a new lesson & emotion we would have to learn to live with and encorporate into the rest of his life.
