i'm thinking about getting a media player that will play video as well as music and was thinking about an i pod or an i pod touch. but the one thing that has stopped me is that i've heard you can only play apples software on it is this true? and if not can and i pod play normal mp3's or video clips?

No it's not true, you can play mp3s on them. You probably need to convert videos though, depending on the format. I use Handbrake to do that.

iPods and iPhones will only play videos encoded in Quicktime format.
If by Quicktime you mean H.264 video and MPEG-4 video files (as .m4v, .mp4, and .mov files), then sure... but these are not strictly Apple standards.

Why would anyone ask such a question on a site like this when all you need to do is go over to Apple's site and look at the specifications yourself?

What does Apple's pages say?
Audio: Audio formats supported: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV
Video: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
If you are curious about a product, look at the product pages first. It eliminates the possibility of bad info and FUD.

See for yourself... iPod touch Specs.

I have an iPod Touch, and I love it. But I have to admit... I'm curious about if it would let me download Firefox, using the built-in Safari, and install Firefox, lol.

MPEG-4 has little to do with Apple - they just use it.

As for quick time movies (container files with a .mov extension) ipods and iphones will NOT play these at all to my knowledge.

Apple contributed key parts of the Quicktime file format to the foundations of MPEG-4, and were the driving force behind keeping the format freely available when finally ratified. I don't expect anyone who wasn't following this format from it's inception to know who provided what, or who wanted it to be as open as possible.

But yeah, they also use it.

Which is why it is important for people to get these types of answers from a source that knows for sure... Apple.

I didn't say nothing I said little, though I will happily change that to "they contributed" and still maintain my point that MPEG4 is NOT Apple's own format.

Well it depends how good they are at searching them out - my ipod only plays h264 movies and one or two other codecs - so while it plays "mp4" movies it cannot decode all codecs and I know no way to add extra codecs to it.

You said "MPEG-4 has little to do with Apple - they just use it." So you can change anything you want now that you know better, but before when you thought that they just used it, you were just wrong.

As for your main point... well, it was pointless. You quoted me, and I never implied or inferred anything of the sort.

So as long as you are considering changes to your original post, might I suggest dropping the quote of my post and your first line, removing the space between "quick" and "time" (as it is a single word), and modifying the remainder of your comment on .mov to acknowledge what was already known in this thread before you entered. But honestly that seems like a lot of reworking in an attempt to fix a 35 word post... but that is totally your choice. :techman:

And you are being sanctimonious having, in your perception, scored a point off someone on the Internet, and are also being rather aggressive in a way I am not used to seeing in this particular forum, perhaps TNZ is where you should be?

Well I quoted you but was referring to the post you quoted, I should have quoted the poster you were quoting, but have no intention of apologising if you consider this a breach of netiquette.

You also implied in your post that ipods can play .mov files which is NOT CORRECT, so you don't know everything! ;)

...pompous rubbish/borderline trolling...
There really is no reply to your post there which would be in keeping with the spirit of this forum.

 All evidence to the contrary.

Sorry if your feelings are hurt, but I didn't say anything about you (other than noting your errors) that you needed to take so personally... or attack me.

In this forum accurate information such be more important that preserving your ego.

But which of us should occupy TNZ here? You called me sanctimonious and referred to my post as pompous rubbish/borderline trolling... all of which violate board rules and were in response to me simply pointing out that you were in error in your statement.

And lets recall that you offered to change your post... I was simply offering helpful suggestions.

I didn't imply anything... I quoted Apple. If you are unhappy with what they implied, take it up with them.

I am not attacking you personally but the style in which you were posting, which I considered far more suitable to TNZ, and my feelings are fine, but I appreciate the apology.

None of which violate board rules IMHO - though feel free to notify TerriO to make a call on that if you must.

Once again the fine line is I was commenting on your POST not YOU. I called your post pompous rubbish, which I have every right to do, I do consider your posting style borderline trolling, which is again my right and distinct from calling you personally a troll. I also said your post was sanctimonious - I have no idea whether you are personally that way inclined, I have never met you.

And lets recall that you offered to change your post... I was simply offering helpful suggestions.
In the spirit of co-operation that is supposed to exist here I offered a clarification which was met with a post I still consider sanctimonious pompous rubbish which could easily be interpreted as trolling.

Edit:
All that said, as neither of us intended personal offense - I am perfectly willing to draw a line under this before it goes too far and shake on it if you are.

Interesting fine line you have there... you get to cross it as much as you want and claim otherwise?

The thing about forums, verses other types of discussions, is that there is a running transcript of what was said. You are say that your comment was directed at my post and not me, but what did you actually say? Lets look again...
"And you are being sanctimonious having, in your perception, scored a point off someone on the Internet, and are also being rather aggressive in a way I am not used to seeing in this particular forum, perhaps TNZ is where you should be?"
That sure looks like it was directed at me.

Well, unless you take upon yourself to edit your posts, we'll let Terri deal with it in her own good time. She'll see it all soon enough.

I see it, and it's a good thing I saw it now and not after the wake I'm about to leave for.

Okay, okay. Tempers are flaring. I can see that. Lets everyone take a step back, take a breath, and remember we're dealing with other human beings, okay? Nobody is an expert on everything. That's just a fact. No matter how much we might like to think we know, there's always going to be someone out there who knows more than we do. We're all here to presumably discuss the subject of video that will play on iPod/iPhone, correct? What Apple says will play on their own device is something that probably is a good idea to trust. However, let's also remember that there are always people out there making things work that are against Apple specs. Yes, Apple says it's a particular way, but that's not the be-all, end-all of the situation.

We all have a tendency to take our sources very seriously. I appreciate that. However, let's remember that there will inevitably be conflicting reputable sources on some subjects. If we keep an open mind and admit that we're not absolutely infallible, and our sources--while excellent for the most part--may not have examined all of the angles in their research/work.

It's good to see everyone knows there's a line where we're venturing toward TNZ territory. Remember, post, not the poster, please. We can all learn from, and teach, each other here.

I'm closing this up since I doubt it's at a point where the subject can be returned to. No warnings, just friendly reminders to everyone that they can teach just as easily as they can learn here. Everyone's expertise is appreciated. Galactic scooby, you're welcome to start another thread on the subject if you want.
