I Need this movie-now

I'm with you. I'm looking forward to this new Trek film and TR2N; life has been throwing me some curveballs lately, and it's comforting to have solid milestones in the future even if they have nothing to do with me personally.

Considering actual attendence numbers(not just box office) are up around 22% YTD, I'd say it seems to be.

"YTD," of course, are statistics for a single month at this point, and are up by comparison with the same period last year. This isn't sufficient to demonstrate a trend. The question is what movies were playing first-run last January versus this last month?

Movie attendance in 2008 was, in fact, down from 2007. Given the frantic concern about decreased retail purchases in the fourth quarter it's real hard to argue that people just noticed the recession in January and suddnely started to feel bad about it - therefore, as the argument goes, choosing to drown their sorrows in a $4.00 "small" Coke.

That $4.00 small Coke is actually a pretty good deal, here it's almost like
a bucket. Anyways, I bet the trend continues. Much like the Video Game
business, there are certain forms of entertainment people are going to see
enough value in to continue to spend on.

People are going to shy away from trips and concert events and move more
toward these types of entertainment. $7-8 or so isn't a bad price to go to
an event with friends or with family when you just want to chill out and laugh
or see some explosions. $50-60 isn't bad for a game that usually has 10-15
hours or more of entertainment not counting the multiplayer options that
sometimes add a whole lot of replay.

These two industries are going to do well in the recession.

Get your fix now... read Trek Lit... =)
Some of the PF fiction is awesome! I like some of it on par with my favourite series episodes!

I guess I'm having trouble getting excited for the movie because I'm worried I'll be terribly disappointed- or worse, it'll be great, and still do poorly, and Trek on screen will go away... as they threaten. =(

Oddly enough, I have that same concern.
I'm concerned that the movie will be excellent in quality, but will fare poorly in theaters due to uninterested public and anti-JJ/anti-Trek XI movie "fans".

There aren't enough anti-JJ/anti-Trek XI "fans" for it to make any difference.

And outside this board it's gotten very good reviews and alot of non-fans
have shown interest in it.

Oh, I agree. It's just one of those little fears that likes to sit in the back of your mind, kind of thing. I want this movie to be spectacular, both as a Trek fan and as someone who just loves a good story.

^ Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but I've not seen alot of anti-JJ drama going on. Yeah, we've had a certain amount of 'resistance' to a re-imaging of the TOS portion of the Tek universe (as has been sufficiently documented in this very forum). But that has been chiefly on the part of a few ingrained TOS fans who would probably never be happy unless they could age Shatner and Nimoy down to 35 years old again and bring James Doohan and DeForest Kelley back from the grave. Oh...and make the Enterprise look exactly the same.

But anti-JJ drama? I don't really see that as a big issue. Lost is a great show...and this movie would by no means be a failure if it received the same level of acclaim and popularity among the masses.

I’m looking forward to the movie too, but I haven’t reached that really anxious stage yet since it is still about three months off. That will probably hit me a week or two before the movie opens.

If this movie does bomb, it won't spell the death of Trek. We'll just have a long, long break until someone decides to greenlight another one. I mean, ENT ended in 2005, and four years later, here we are with a new movie. Four years isn't really that long.

It's just that if it bombs, we're unlikely to see any more ABRAMS Trek.

With this recession, if it goes on too long, it might be 30 years.:vulcan::cardie:

About the possibility of a new series.....

You know back in the day when all of the Star Trek franchise was owned by one owner it'd be a no-brainer for TPTB to pour insane money down the tubes for a new series after a successful movie or series of movies.

TMP more or less lead Paramount down the path towards TNG, putting Gene in charge of it no less.

However, now that Star Trek has two parents, Paramount on the film side and CBS inc. on the TV side, it's highly unlikely that a new series will come down the pike any time soon.

Why ? Two words Leslie Moonves.

You see old Leslie Moonves hates all of Sci-Fi, especialy Star Trek, and seeing as he's The big boss, The head honcho, The number one guy, The C.E.O. at CBS inc. Can you say "Snowballs Chance In Heck ?"

So unless Leslie Moonves has a change of heart, or dies and that in turn puts someone else in charge of CBS inc. who isn't so close minded about doing Sci-Fi on thier network, it's not going to happen.

Even if the new movie made one trillion bucks, Leslie Moonves won't put the bucks toward a new Star Trek series, he'd rather just make money by selling the old shows to syndication and just leave it at that.

So unless you know something I don't ( Namely Leslie Moonves giving a poop about Star Trek ) I don't see a new series happening again in any of our lifetimes. ( Well, those of us over 40 anyway )

* I say we put Leslie Moonves in a red shirt and have him beam down to the planet with Kirk. He's then turned into a cube and then crushed by the alien of the week. Then after that we can get on with doing a new Star Trek series that takes place after the new movie or something like that. *

Personally, I don't even want a new Trek tv show right now.
I don't believe the time is right yet for Trek to go there and face once again the hard reality of weekly ratings wars etc

I'd rather this movie is good, entertaining and financially successful enough that we get a couple of good sequels before we start thinking about a new tv adventure.

I Have to admit, it's been an exceptionally bad week. I would just like to share, the sooner this movie comes out the better. As pathetic as it seems, it is one of the things which is keeping me sane.

I can't wait for this movie-maybe someone can get me into an advance screening-REALLY advanced! OK-pobably not, but if anyone could use it it would be me.

MRE

While you wait, another Trek remake to tide you over:

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::lol::lol::lol:

Now I would definitely pay $8.50 to see THAT!

I will admit I was going to wait for the DVD release, but after seeing the commercial during the SUper Bowl, I plan on seeing it in the theaters.

I don't actually mind at all if it's a hit and then we get a series of well-made movies (a la the '80s) instead of a TV show. I am not sure I'm ready for another TV series debacle yet. ENT was really stressful. all the fighting, all the resentment, the frustration, and then the cancellation. ugh, no.

let's see how the movie does, then let's have a couple more movies. then we shall see.

Just curious, what about the SB ad was more convincing than the trailer?

OT, I cannot wait any longer. If I thought I could get away with it I'd break into the Paramount vaults and have myself a little private screening.

Yeah, which is why most of it's probably in my noggin. I guess it's a bit naive, but I really want this movie to do exceptionally well, and I really want to enjoy it in the process.
