I buy clothes online if I'm familiar with the brand and am familiar with the fit. I'm short and round, and as much as I hate trying on clothes it's a must if I'm shopping somewhere new. Shoes I always try on as I have flat, wide feet, and I never buy clothes for my sons online as they're both short for their ages and therefore I need to see the length of the item before I buy it. My daughter prefers to try on anything she buys, so I rarely shop online for her.
Where tops are concerned I tend to find a lot of decent stuff in charity shops. When my kids were small I bought at least half their clothes at charity shops. Since I do some sewing myself I know when a second-hand item is good quality and still has a lot of life left in it.
Apart from clothes I buy a lot of items except groceries online (unless the delivery charge is too high), though I do support independent shops whenever I can. It's so much easier to shop around for bargains online than to schlep from one shop to another on foot.

I know when I used to buy at Zeller's they had a motto

You know, Dickies have always been difficult to buy, at least in my area. I liked wearing their pants back when I was in high school, and there was only one department store around that would actually have the style and color I needed (Gottschalk's). Well, now that they have been out of business for a few years, I can never find Dickies in the right style for the right price. I considered buying online but am reluctant because I'd really like to try them on first. But at the few stores I've been able to find them at in person, they are too expensive and after trying them on it becomes abundantly clear to me that I will need the petite or short versions. I have short legs I guess, and even though they fit well everywhere else, the regular pants are flowing across the floor. But, I know that petite/short pants usually don't fit the same way around the waist, so it really needs to be tried on to get the right size, but they don't offer them in any stores I've seen.
So I just don't buy them.
Maybe someday I will buy some online and then return them if need be.

I don't know if I could ever buy clothes online. I get that online shopping is easy and convenient, but it's the same issue I have with renting movies. You're not really shopping, just going directly to what you want and getting it. When I go shopping, I like looking, touching, and trying on stuff to see if it fits, or in the case of renting movies, reading the back. I remember when Video stores were much more prevalent, I would just go into one and just browse. If everything is moving online now, that's a little harder to do.
^I'm like that with books. I can't shop for books online specifically because I love being able to browse in an actual store. I bought a Nook a couple years ago, and I have yet to read anything on it because I still find myself wandering into book stores and buying real, paper books.
I love shopping for everything online. I hate shopping in person. Trying on clothes that don't fit or they don't have the right size or color, not finding parking, little children running around in parking lots, huge lines at the register or just to try stuff on, crowded stores and malls, things that a million people before you have touched. No thank you!

I also am diligent about checking measurements online before buying because I know a lot of tops won't fit. I do buy clothes in person but rarely have the patience to try them on in the store. I pretty much only do if it's a formal dress.
I bought my last two swimsuits online and they fit like a dream.
I'm too obsessed with having the right fit, and measurements, however precise, aren't usually enough for that. I'm not just a matter of size, it's a matter of "how does it look on me?" I saw suits that were the right shape, the right size, the right colour, but they just didn't fit me. Style is more art than science.
I'm not likely to find clothes that have a perfect fit, whether in the store or online. Measurements actually do a decent job because it's the most important part. I know if something will be too small on my chest or too big on my hips or waist. I also have a pretty good idea by now of what necklines, silhouettes, patterns, and colors look good on me.
For something more formal like a dress, I'll try that on like I said.
But for everyday shirts, I'll take my chances online. If it doesn't fit I can always return it.
I'm not likely to find clothes that have a perfect fit either, beyond maybe a bespoke tailoring shop in Hobbiton, but it just make me try harder. 
More seriously, I understand what you mean. I'm not a great fan of shopping myself, but I do so rarely (I prefer few good-quality clothes to many cheap ones) that it's not really an hassle to try them when I do. Or maybe customers are just more well-behaved around here, so it's not the ordeal you describe.

I wish I had that option, too.
I do rock my kilt from time to time, tho. (I had to pick the smallest size availabe for men, and I can still almost fold it twice around my frame. The alternative was one with Mickey Mouse on it, but my self-esteem would have suffered too much from it...)
Me too. Like I said, if one knows one's shirt size, why would there be any reason to believe that a shirt bought online won't fit?
I have found that different companies have very different ideas of what sizes actually are. I have Mediums and XLs that are exactly the same size.
