I made Law Review!

So what will you do next, Alidar? Do you work for someone specifically or is it more of an academia kind of thing (sorry, I'm not familiar with all the details)

Congrats. You can now start charging for any advice you give on TrekBBS. :bolian:

Congratulations! Sorry for the late reply...I wish you the greatest success and am confident that you will do well.

I guess the title says everything on this subject. After a year of pain in the ass classes and brutally painful exams, I had to spend the first three weeks of my summer studying and writing a paper for the purposes of getting accepted onto a law journal. To make a long story short, I just got a call today informing me that I was just accepted into law review!

CONGRATS! THAT'S FANTASTIC! (Don't forget the little people!)

Congrats.

Is this something like Journalism on the Law or a step towards becoming a Lawyer or something else?

Basically, law reviews are a journal that every law school publishes. They are entirely student run, but most of the publications are submitted by attorneys and edited by us. But there are student articles published in them as well. You'll find them read by many lawyers and quoted in court opinions (I think Mason law review articles have been quoted by the Supreme Court a couple times).

Woot! That will look great on the ol' CV. What is the topic of the paper?

I don't have a topic. I have most of this semester to think of and write one.

That is a very impressive feat. My most hearty congratulations. And condolences, as your life as you know it is over. All your formerly free time will now be devoted to Law Review notes and footnotes and cite form ... and you'll love every minute of it (or almost every minute.) It's a great accomplishment. Best wishes! :bolian:

I won't count on loving every minute, but that's what I expect. They'll probably send me assignments pretty soon. Luckily, I have Thursdays and Fridays with virtually no classes, so I can fit it in.

Nicer part? Someone cited me!!!! Something like, "Generally, regulations regarding food safety have been imposed at both the state and federal levels"--citing my Comment for the historical review of the regulations.

Very cool. Congrats on getting cited.

It is an academic thing. I'll basically start taking classes on how to write a good article and I'll be doing grunt work editing work submitted by attorneys. Then, in my spare time (ha!) I'll be writing my own article about some area of the law no one has theoretically written about. Then I'll try and have it published in the spring edition.

That sounds very fulfilling, and I hope you do well. I look forward to your greater success, and you've got my best wishes.

What a wonderful opportunity for you. So many benefits! Increases your writing skill and literally gives you a massive boost in the resume department no matter what area you specialize in. Totally impressive news!

Congratulations! In about two more years, you'll want to light the bluebook on fire and watch it burn. But in the mean time, enjoy! I loved my time on law review.

I wanted to burn that blue book last year. I don't think law review will change that.

As an update, I got an email telling me my first assignment goes out some time very soon (my guess is today or tomorrow). They expect it'll take me 20-40 hours to complete it!

I also got an email about an internship I applied for. Back when I applied for it, I had been shot down for two things I applied and figured I needed a fall internship instead. Law Review kinda changes that. At the same time, it's something I'd like to do if I had the time for it. It's not prestigious and it won't pay, but it does provide a good opportunity and learning experience and I view it as a good cause. So that's my next thing to figure out.

Plus it is a networking opportunity. You need to meet enough people and impress them so that you will not only get a job, but a job that you like!

Congrats on the law review, btw!

Thanks. It's in Courthouse, so it would be perfect if I get it. My only fear is killing myself with work.
