I just realized... Calvin's mom had no job!

I mean, sure, you could say that being a mother is a full-time job, especially when you're Calvin's mother, and indeed it is, but there was, thankfully, only one of him.

Wow, what a "put-down" for families where they've decided to opt for the SAHP, rather than outsource.

I remember that satire. It's still tough to read, but it does make you think.

Eh, it's using C&H to editorialize a certain point - which I'm totally cool with, it's just not about C&H itself per se.

Now this, OTOH...

Hobbes never struck me as the *(&@-blocker type. He's usually much more laid-back.

That's a good one, and it's definitely in the style of the artist. Did he actually do that one? It's not quite as detailed as his usual stuff, though, so I'm guessing no.

He ain't cock-blocking, though, is he? He's mad-dogging.

Probably jealous, if you want to go by canonical context! :rommie:

Did you mean subtext? I think the actual text made it pretty clear that Hobbes was sweet on Susie, and that's what I think the cartoon is building on. So his jealousy is hetero, not slashy.

If Watterson had painted it, Hobbes would have been cheerfully going along with the girl.

And aye, Christopher, that's what I was referring to. ;)

I was just about to find the painting that Awesome Possum posted until I clicked this page. A much better ending than that silly Ritalin strip.

As for Calvin's mom, I'm pretty sure that I remember a strip where Calvin asks his dad why his mom didn't work. "Well, her job caused her a lot of stress and aggravation, so she was used to it and we figured she should be the one to---" "HEY!"

I've always kinda liked that one where an older Calvin is carrying Susie on his back hiking and Hobbes (as the doll) is in her backback.

I never realized how much Calvin & Hobbes fanfic artwork was out there, although I shouldn't be surprised considering how extremely (deservedly) popular the strip is. I like the fact that some of them assume he'll eventually hook up with Susie.

As for Calvin's mom, I recall reading in the Tenth Anniversary book that Watterson liked to occasionally show her participating in various personal interests, like painting, to indicate that there was more to her than just looking after her son. Dang it, I used to own that book but it disappeared before I came home from college.

That one reminds me of the ending of Toy Story 3.

Call me conservative, but I always thought an intact family is one where the father works and the mother raises the kids. Or the other way round. Both parents working and leaving the kid to some nanny or whatever isn't as good.

I know I'm in the minority, but these pieces of fan art don't make me feel wistful so much as give me the urge to pull out my own eyes.
