I have to admit something: I didn't hate "Sub Rosa"

Sure, it wasn't the most traditional Trek plot but damnit, I actually liked the story well enough and I thought that Gates McFadden was great. Some say that it is among Star Trek's worst episodes, ever. I didn't even think that it was the worst of season 7. So there it is. I enjoyed the episode. What say you? Anyone with me on this, or do I stand alone? Flame on. :bolian:

^You missed the point of the topic.

What other reaction are we supposed to have? Who cares? It's not even an argument or a debate on the ep, it's just "I like this episode". I mean, good for the OP, but whatever.

Really, guys? Did anyone other than The Blob even read the post? I said I LIKED the episode, then gave two reasons why I did. Most people seem to hate the episode and I was looking for others that enjoyed it.

Awesome "discussion" forum.

Sheesh.

I liked it. Granted it was hard (if not impossible) to take seriously, but it was a good episode. Thought Gates did a wonderful job with the story she was given. Sure there are a few spots that a campy and a bit over the top (Granny rising from the grave being the funniest moment in the episode) but I still like it and it has a lot of rewatchability for me. It's usually on my Halloween "Spook Trek" viewing list.

I like the episode, actually. I will admit that it is a little different, but, when I first saw it, it was pretty suspenseful--I honestly didn't know where the whole thing was going until the very end, and that, to me, has the makings of a pretty good story.

There was one moment that I still find fairly amusing, when Picard (I think) walks onto the bridge and says something like "Fog?" Riker's response was "It just rolled in on us, sir." I still get a bit of a laugh out of that.

That dead Nana scene... it actually creeped me out. I've had nightmares about dead people doing that before.

Sub Rosa was awesome. Alright a little implausible with that creepy alien man always being a companion to all of Beverly's female ancestors since what was it? The 17th century? But it was good drama, loved Beverly's grandma rising up from the dead!

Well, I'll stand up and be counted. I like this episode. I don't care for the faux Scots-ness. I find that a little cliche. Other than that, there's loads I like. I love how lovely Gates looks, and I like the idea of a ghostly lover. There are corny moments and other bits and pieces that miss the mark, but on the whole I like this episode.

OP, don't worry. You're not alone in your liking for "Sub Rosa" and nor are you alone for being one of the only to like an episode that everyone else hates.

In my case I'm sure people are like ""Masks" has a fan? Since when?"

Anyway, I'm one of the only who actually happen to like "Sub Rosa". I'm more of the touchy-feely type so the plot was likable for me. Not to mention, I also like the ghost-like theme to the plot about Ronin being a ghost and all.

I just wish there was another S7 episode of Troi wearing the dress uniform with that hair ("Liaisons" doesn't count because of the hair).

Speaking of Troi, you gotta love how Beverly is trying tell her she's basically got spirit-raped, and Troi seems jealous about that! :guffaw:

And I liked Beverly's hair when it looked like this.

One thing I didn't get though, what was up with that mist of fog on the Bridge?

Anytime you have to rip off trashy romance it's not going to end well...

I'm curious, though, do you defenders of Sub Rosa actually think it's a good episode, objectively? Or is it just an episode you enjoy?

For example, I really enjoy The Naked Now. But I also think it's not a good episode. Just amusing schlock.

This epsiode has:

A family moment for one of the main characters

Somebody who dies (more than one somebody)

An amusing bit of dialogue (Picard: "Fog?", Riker: "It just rolled in on us, sir.")

Lovingly referred to as the "masturbation scene," a scene where one of the better looking female character is involved in something semi-physical.

A visit to a weird world with at least one weird-looking alien species

What's not to like? If I recall, most of the agreed-upon best TNG epsiodes only have a few of these critical elements...

On a serious note, I actually think that it is much better than many think. I'd say that I agree with you about "The Naked Now," but I think "Sub Rosa" is better than the former. It gets classed with a lot of episodes that I truly think are much worse than "Sub Rosa," even though I'd be the first to argue that there are many that are much better.

My problem with the episode is that (aside from the dead grandmother scene, which is actually quite creepy) the parts that are supposed to be mysterious or moving or whatever just...well, they make me snicker, and not in a good way. And when I'm not snickering, I'm feeling sorry for Gates McFadden. So what with all the snickering and squirming, it's an uncomfortable episode all around for me.

Now, there are episodes that are bad or just not very good that I still enjoy. "Sub Rosa" ain't one of them, though. I am not sure I could call it the worst of Trek, but golly is it up there, or perhaps down there.

Unlike sub-rosa, I didn't know Masks was disliked till 20 years later. I remember it getting really good reviews and a notice in TV guide. I think its one of best episodes of stng. I'm still amazed by the inexplicable Masks-hate phenomenon.

Both. Is it up in my top 10? No, but it's on my top 20 of Trek episodes.

I think everyone did great with script, (couple missteps aside) there's a nice amount of tension and question about what's really going on, and Picard and Beverly have a couple of nice character moments.

I'd say Sub Rosa is above average, because it is quirky, and Dr Crusher is right about what is good about Sub Rosa. It was gripping stuff and to me didn't have any cringe worthy moments. So what's not to like?
