I have been potentially offered a job in Mongolia

 yep, teaching English and I don't know what to do...

My friend went out there 3 years ago because his Uncle offered him the job and I was given the same offer but declined it mainly because I thought it was kind of stupid but now I feel different. My friend has made it work for 3 years and has told me many good things about the job, the country and since I loss my job, plus with the current economic climate its become very tempting. I don't know if am right for the job but then am smarter then my friend who took it and you do a course while you teach out there, plus English being my native tongue give mes obviously some of the skills.

You apparantly get assistants with you who speak both English and the native language out there (though English is close to being number 2 for the country) and you get taught there language at the same time. You follow a list of what to do so you don't have to come up with a massive lesson plan on your own and for out there its a decent wage with bills etc not being so much leaving quite a bit spare.

Its all very tempting, seeing another part of the world and possibly getting a career out of it at the same time (my house mate mum does the same job but in England). At the same its scary because I will be on the other side of the world though I will have somewhere to live, they give you an apartment with the job though I can live with my friend apparantly since he lives alone and hates it.

what would you do ?

Like I have all ready said not trying to get rid of my little brother but if there is a job offer you should take it.
If it does not work out you can all ways come back and if it does you will have gained some qualifications and experise while the UK rides out the bad times.

Well, what I would do and the advice I would give others are two different things. I hate travelling, wouldn't want to live in another country, and would probably go out of my mind in such a new environment. I am very much a creature of habit, and I start to become really unhappy if I can't go visit the places I did certain things, like "there's the bus stop I waited at for hours with my friend," stuff like that. I try new things but I always have to have something familiar to come back to. I think it might be slightly OCD related too.

However, other people see things differently and aren't weird about this like me. If you are even considering it then that is a good sign that it would probably work out for you. Since you don't have a job at home it might be great to get away until things get better there. If I were you, I would go for at least one year and then reassess after that. If you don't like it you can always come home. But you might really like it, so why not try?

If you're up for it, have a job offer there, and have a way home if things don't work as expected then I say go for it.

The important question is will you be able to do you TV threads:p

I think there 8 hours ahead of UK so thats even further ahead of USA and I would probably have to sell my PC and buy a laptop and need to find internet etc etc.

oh well looks like am training my sister to take over

god damn Mongolians! but seriously, go, experience another culture, i'll give you a list of people who I want you to smack upside the head for me

I'd go for it. Mongolian barbeque is the stuff, plus, I really mostly enjoyed my time in Mongolia doing tax accounting. At least, up until I was put to death for seeing the wrong woman. (And I don't mean we were dating. I literally mean just for seeing her.)

I doubt that last part is a big problem anymore, though. The parliamentary republic that runs things there now is probably much more reasonable than the Khanate was.

I would consider it if I was already involved with and interested in teaching. I'm single and not especially attached to alot of people so that sort of adventure would be pretty compelling.

It's a fantastic opportunity. I you try something and don't like it, at least you've tried. There's nothing worse than thinking 'Oh I wish I'd done that...' Carpe Diem and all that. Go for it :)

Good luck! But if you're going to teach English, get your they're, there and theirs straight! Just a bit of friendly advice.

Go for it. What a wonderful opportunity to live abroad & to learn to know a culture very different from your own.

Wow. Cool story. :techman:

Wow. Cool story. :techman:
I have memories of past lives, and that was one of them: I was essentially an accountant keeping up with taxes collected from part of the lands the Khan's father had conquered. I was summoned to speak with a young lady who was minor royalty from one of those lands who had been brought to the palace. I don't remember the contents of the conversation, just some of the images related to it, but I was later put to death for seeing her before the Khan had.

I've also been hit in the head an awful lot in my life, and yes, I do bear that in mind in how seriously I take all of that. Really hard to reconcile reincarnation with atheism.

But completely aside from that, Mongolian BBQ is entirely the stuff.

I meant it seriously; very cool story. I love hearing stuff like this. I don't believe in it myself, but it's a great story to tell people and good for dining out on, I bet.

Go for it. Who knows if you will ever get an opportunity like this again.
