$^!# I got laid off.

Alarm? No.

However there are many people stuck with non-refundable deposits they put down on the party tent and keg equipment.
Hell, I don't even know you that well but I already arranged for some clowns and zoo animals to get here first thing in the morning. I suppose I can pit them against each other in some sort of fight to the death in order to derive some enjoyment, but it's a terrible waste of money for a funemployed person such as myself. :(

The first person that posts a "Plecostomus Not. Dead." anything gets banne back to the stone age.

I'm just saying. :vulcan:

oh so tempting..

but on to more important people
:)

geb,,
one the insurance issue. find the home page for your state government.
look both for the departments that handle unemployment and over see insurance.

go to their pages because both my have info you need to know and possibly some of the answers you seek.

are you sure that gaming is the only industry interested in 3d modeling.

Indeed. Gep you mentioned you might make a move to LA. Architecture, commercial advertising (automotive in particular), medical imaging, have demand for 3D modeling in LA. Video game design? Not so much :(. LA is not the friendliest place for video game design right now. I know a few unemployed 6 mo+ modelers/designers who are packing up and going to the Bay Area and/or working on the oil rigs to pay their rent.

I'm assuming you have a working knowledge of MAYA? It's becoming de riguer in commercial advertising imagery in this town. I know because it's dashed my dreams of being a car shooter :rommie:

Really sorry to hear this Gep. I hope you're able to get insurance sorted.

Some very good advice already in this thread, so I'll just add this. Take a deep breath, then another, and now start planning your future. Where do you want to go?

Good luck!

^Thanks. :)

Yeah, I saw yesterday that there's a federal stimulus package that pays 65% of COBRA costs (I think I brought that up already...?), which was mentioned on the Oregon.gov website. It's good enough that I'll probably take them up on it, since I definitely could use insurance in July.

Oh, gosh, no, I actually hate gaming. I'm, like, the only person in my age group that I know who doesn't play FPSes, World of Warcraft, RTS games, or any of that stuff. They drive me nuts. So when I say I'm looking at LA, I am thinking visual effects or other types of 3D jobs, which is what seduced me into this line of work in the first place. I figure being uninterested in the final product a company is making would hurt my chances in the long-run of standing out in the field, so getting out of game work is probably a good thing.

MAYA, 3D Studio Max and LightWave all yes. So I think I'm prepared in that area.

As for progress, I've got some family that works at Boeing, others who know people at HP, so I've put out feelers there in the visualization area; also, it turns out that some folks at the place I'm going for treatment in LA knows someone who works for some VFX studio of some kind (I don't know which one yet), so they're going to try to hook me up there. :techman:

^^^Ok I was under the impression that your field of interest was video game design. I must have crossed a few posts in my brain.

Yay for diverse interests, adaptability and comprehensive education! :D

Have you offered to do CGI work for The Asylum? In just one 40-hour work week, you could do CGI for five of their movies all by yourself. :)

^^ If he can do it in a single week, then he'd be out of a job the week after; not much to go by, I'd think. :D
