$^!# I got laid off.

Hey Gep, 2 things.

1) if that medical appointment was made using the companies health plan they may still have to cover it considering it was made before notifying you of the layoff. They might also be legally in trouble because it could be viewed that you are being let go due to the medical expense.

Huh. Would that only apply to some kind of preferred provider thing, though? What I'll be having to do is pay up front, then bill my insurance for reimbursement. I'm not clear how that would apply. Do you know how I could find out more about how that might work?

I did just find out that there's a federal stimulus package that pays up to 65% of COBRA plan costs if one meets certain criteria (which I do), so there may be hope yet.

2) Most apartment complexes have clauses in the lease that let you out of the contract if you have to move more than 150 miles for a job.

Good to know. Thanks. :techman:

I wouldn't mind being laid off. Collect unemployment for a while. Sure it'd be less than half what I make now, but for zero percent of the work it's a good deal.

God am I lazy.

It could be worse. You could live in MI and have mostly auto manufacture on your resume.

Or just have a Bible college certificate/Amish Technical Institute degree.

Does your employer know about your medical issue? They may be willing to extend your insurance for another month.

It gets really boring and you end up joining a Star Trek message board in order to pass the time and then you spend your days nit-picking things with the most incessantly whiny and annoying people on the face of the Ear-... I mean with some of the loveliest people you could ever meet. :shifty:

I got nothing of value to add but I hope that you get through this as quickly and favorably as possible.

The first person that posts a "Plecostomus Not. Dead." anything gets banne back to the stone age.

I'm just saying. :vulcan:

Gep, some advice for you.

1. Give yourself time to let it sink in. Depending on how long you were there (I assume not long since you were the new guy), take a couple days or a couple weeks to get yourself together.

2. Assemble your resume. Most people don't put nearly enough thought into this. A good resume is the difference between a job and no job for a lot of people. Considering your field, you should assemble a portfolio of your best work that showcases your range and skill.

3. Don't get discouraged. Network. Sign up for as many job sites as you can. Get networked on LinkedIn or any similar service for people in your field. Talk to your friends and family, and once you've got your resume and portfolio together, put out feelers to see if anyone you know--and anyone they know--has any potential work for you.

As for moving, well, it sucks, but sometimes that's what you have to do. I am currently working in New Jersey while my wife and kids stay in Indiana, because I lost my job there back in December. I got a new job pretty quickly but there are some issues surrounding them moving up here. My money goes a lot further in Indiana, too, so we're not exactly in a hurry to move everyone up here, if it ever happens.

Just be sure to take a little time for yourself. I know I was horribly depressed when I was jobless. I slept all day and had no motivation to do anything. It was only through force of will that I made myself send out resumes, fill out apps, and call companies and recruiters.

Apparently psychologists encourage you to call it "funemployment" and view it as an opportunity to relax and do things you couldn't do while working.

I read an article a while back about 4 i-banking friends who got laid off at the same time and were having a whale of a time having boozy lunches, playing golf & paintball in the afternoon and conducting illicit affairs while their wives were busy at work. I suspect they must be back at work at a new bank by now (and in the process of arranging their decree nisis) but they did sound like they were having a blast in the face of their unemployment.

Gep - good luck finding a new job soon dude. And don't put your back out on the golf course - or the bedroom - while you're waiting for the next interview! :D

Apply for state government jobs or you can join the military. The Army actually has a audiovisual graphics MOS you can go into. A supply Soldier I know is changing from supply to this MOS.

Alarm? No.

However there are many people stuck with non-refundable deposits they put down on the party tent and keg equipment.
