I feel so lost without DS9 in my life...

I am a huge huge Star Trek fan. I must have seen every episode of TNG a dozen times, and I really got into watching Voyager too.

However, I had never watched more than two episodes of Deep Space 9 in my whole life. It wasn't that I didn't like it, I just had heard about how it has long story arcs and I wanted to be able to follow what was going on.

Well, around June of this year, I decided I was going to watch DS9 from the beginning, and watch every episode. I totally was not prepared for what I was about to start.

This show absolutely blew me away. I felt so involved with it, I cared about the characters in a way I never have with a TV show before, and I looked forward to getting home from work each night, to watch 3 or 4 episodes of DS9.

On my days off from work, I would watch 8 or even sometimes 10 episodes and I loved every single one of them.

I finished Season 7 off about 3 weeks ago, and I really do feel a sadness or emptiness without having new DS9 to watch.

This show went from being "That Star Trek series I've never seen" to my absolute, all time favorite series of all time (Star Trek or otherwise) and I will always have such great memories of my time spent at home watching the best Star Trek series of them all.

I've thought about trying the "relaunch" novels because I want more, more more!! But i'm sure nothing will compare to what i've left behind...

I did the same thing when I first watched DS9. I would watch four or five episodes a day and was depressed when I finished the series.
You should read the books though, I think they do a good job continuing the story.

Read two books called Avatar one and two. They are written by S.D. Perry and take place not long after the show ends.

We get more than a few threads a year in this forum that tell a similar story - people who'd never tried DS (some of whom who had actually prejudged it negatively because of 'something they'd heard'), but then decided to give it a go...and discovered what is now their favorite show.

Glad you found DS9, and that you enjoyed it so much. And by the way, as you get more familiar with the episodes, I think that certain ones of them get even more fun to watch, because these characters are like your family, you know so much about them.

In any event, glad you found DS9...and glad you found your way here.

Actually, and I tell this story often, DS9 was what made me a Trek fan.

It all started in 1997 when I started picking up model kits to do as a hobby and at the time I was able to get Trek kits and SW kits extremely cheap at a local discount store, Toys R Us and Kay Bee Toys.

Well, coincidentally, I would work on these kits late at night and at 1:00 am, Tuesday through Staurday, my local Fox affiliate would play DS9 reruns... in sequence. I got hooked on the show because of the serial aspect to it and it got me interested in all Trek after that.

And it's not that I didn't like Trek before that, but I was a casual viewer and when an episode of TOS or TNG or even DS9 was on I would watch it and enjoy it but I never went out of my way to watch Trek and I certainly didn't understand what made it so special to Trek fans.

Because of DS9 (and for all the reasons mentioned) I found out. There is something magical about the escapism of the Trek Universe and something even more unique about DS9 that Niners like us get that other people don't. And other Trek fans get pissed when you suggest that they don't get it because they think we DS9 fans come off as arrogant but it's really not the case. Niners simply have a differnt kind of connection to the series than other Trek fans who don't appreciate it just don't have. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just the way it is. It's akin to how non-Star Trek fans don't understand the appeal that Trek has to us in general. When people ask me about my fandom I simply tell them that I can't explain it and they need to be a fan to understand it.

They just released the first five stories set after the series in an omnibus called Twist of Faith. The next two books will be collected in These Haunted Seas in 2008.

If you like Garak, A Stitch in Time is a must-read. Also, the Millennium trilogy deals with events before, during, and after the series, and it is fantastic.

My first foray into Star Trek was in my first sememster of college when TNG came on. I watched it faithfully from start to finish and enjoyed its run, and still do today, in reruns. I thougth it was a great show.

But about 8 years ago, working late one night, I found DS9. I got sucked in immediately. I found that although I wasnt 100% sure of what was going on, that I could still follow the story. And the character development was outstanding. And when I stopped working late hours, I found myself wanting to get the dvds, but alas they were expensive.

Then this spring, my hubby bought the entire series for a really good price. I started watching DS9 from the first episode to the last over the course of the summer. I just finished "What YOu Leave Behind" the other night.

I pride myself on my knowledge of TNG and my love of that series, but I must say that DS9 is definitely better

I am so glad my hub bought this for me!

I am going to have to watch it over again!

that and similar quotes brought back many happy memories from back in the day when the series was unfolding. When it was the only show you watched and gabbed about during the week...it really did leave a huge empty void when it ended.

My husband and I just completed watching DS9 last night. My husband has seen every episode of every Star Trek series (he owns them on DVD). Now, I have undertaken the task of watching every episode in order from TOS to Enterprise. Anyway, I am not ashamed to admit (and I am sure I am not the only one) that I had tears rolling down my cheeks during the montage of past scenes as Vic sang "The Way You Look Tonight" in "What You Leave Behind." I thought it would have been cool (and I was actually expecting it) if Vic sang "I'll Be Seeing You" since that song played a role in the episode "The Siege of AR-558." I just kept thinking, "I am going to miss these guys so much." Even the bad guys: Kai Winn, Dukat, Weyoun. I would cringe every time Winn uttered the word "child" to Kira. And I will admit that I found Dukat strangely alluring. I loved Weyoun though. He was so condescending to the Cardassians, but as soon as a Founder came on the scene, he'd be groveling on the floor. I also fell in love with the characters of Jake and Nog. I always felt like slapping Wesley Crusher around, but you couldn't help but love Jake and Nog.

Anyway, we watched the first episode of VOY Season I (Caretaker) tonight and I must say it was better than I expected. I'm sure I will grow to like the characters. I just don't think I will love them as much as the folks on DS9.
