I don't own a television

But, if you don't have a television and the last TV you saw was some random 2 minutes of CHEERS...then how do you know TV sucks?

You're just making an assumption. I haven't read Proust. I don't say it's because Proust sucks, because I don't know.

TV isn't a medium or a genre...it's a delivery system. Some TV is good...some not so much so. Just like some books are good and some are written by Dan Brown.

You know what..I find Seven of eleven fascinating..sneering at TV and then posting in forums like Misc..if you don't own a TV then you shouldn't own a computer either..cause people spend as much time on the computer, if not more, than a TV.
I've always loved TV..more so than most..but I would never sneer at others for not owning a TV!! That's just..ludicrous. But, we all have our likes and dislikes..I happen to have known a few people in college who have never owned a TV and one of them was a former roommate of mine! But she respected me as I did her and so I stopped my TV watching as much because of her. But still, why gripe about a TV in an Entertainment oriented forum?? Why not read a book or go outside and enjoy the sunshine?? Sounds like you could use some fresh air...and a cookie! :) But anyway you're entitled to your own opinions about TV..I just find it fascinating that you wait til now to rant about it.

I, personally, would rather spend my time doing something useful than watch television, I don't even own one. The "idiot box" or 'boob tube' is nothing more than an electronic babysitter.

I see all these copies of Entertainment Weekly and People lying around and it's amazing all the "stars" and shows I've never heard of. I have absolutely no idea who these people are. Calista who? Am I supposed to have heard of her? I'm sorry, but I haven't. The last show I watched was some episode of Cheers, and even then, I could only watch for about two minutes before having to shut it off because it insulted my intelligence so terribly. And to all you people who watch the news— watch the news? I don't know about you, but I read the news.

Yes, I decided to stand up to the glass teat. I'm not an elitist, it's just that I'd much rather sculpt or write in my journal or read Proust than sit there passively staring at some phosphorescent screen. If I need a fix of passive audio-visual stimulation, I'll go to catch a Bergman or Truffaut film down at the university. I certainly wouldn't waste my time watching the so-called Learning Channel or, God forbid, any of the mind sewage the major networks pump out.

People don't realize just how much time their TV-watching habit–or, shall I say, addiction–eats up. Four hours of television a day, over the course of a month, adds up to 120 hours. That's five entire days! Why not spend that time living your own life, instead of watching fictional people live theirs? I can't begin to tell you how happy I am not to own a television.

Then the TV section of a forum is not the place to be is it

I really don't understand the point you're trying to make with this post / thread. Why did you decide to share this information about yourself?
Are we supposed to find your life preferences fascinating?
Conveying that information makes no sense to me....seeing as part of your post stated clearly that you were not being elitist.
Snobbery of some brand is the only reason I can see for what you've written in the manner in which you have written it.
Especially because you were careful to deny being "elitist" before anyone even accused you of being so...so you MUST have been aware of how it was going to be perceived.
If that is not the perception you wanted to get from folks who, for the most part, obviously DO have TVs and use them to watch at least one show on occasion...what was the point?
Are we to be inspired to do the same? For not living our lives to the capacity you have managed to? Nope...can't be that because that would clearly also be "elitist".
Hmmm...Really....what precisely was the point?

EDIT: Ahh...I missed the dot. The period reveals all to me now...I guess...nevermind.

After reading that pointless rant once again, I can't help but think...

What would ever give you that idea, Mr. Adventure? We're a studious bunch here!

Also, the grammatical error in the picture you posted, NX-01, is killing me. I'm not sure if that's ironic of me or just pitiful.

 Lucky for me I didn't write it.

I didn't mean you were the cause of the error -- I just meant the error really irked me.

Sorry -- but this is also getting to me. Here is the definition of medium. Also, a nice wikipedia (gasp!) blurb on media. I think it's safe to say TV is a medium. :)

I also don't find an inherent problem of not owning a TV. There are several other medias that one can become engaged with -- and should also be enjoyed by those who have a TV. If one chooses to not include TV in their life, it isn't the end of the world. They may lose an aspect of society and culture, which might impede them, but that's open for debate.

Granted, we all know someone who brags about it, but it's no different from the reaction of someone defending the TV. Everyone feels superior.

But I'm now taking the point of this satire to seriously, after pointing out before it shouldn't be taken to seriously. But I'm white, so it's okay.

I will admit overall TV has been dumb down alot with so many reality shows but there is also nothing wrong with a few guilty pleasures and they are still some fantastic well written and acted shows...

(IMO)

Boston Legal
House
The Sopranos
Dexter
The X Files
Babylon 5
Life on Mars
LOST
Heroes

to name a few. Just because its on TV doesn't mean that it not something of real quality, so I think you need to actually buy a TV.

WOW!! I can't say I've heard your point any time recently. It must have been decades since I last heard those sentiments. You aren't addicted to this BBS mind you? Don't let the LCD and keyboard fool you. You can lose just as much time on the computer.

If you spell the contraction for you are as your and misuse the word to in the place of to then you most certainly have spent too much time free instead of in your Grammar Books. :techman:

I came to this thread because I heard someone is handing out cookies.

To the OP: well played my good man, well played.
