I Don't Like Star Wars!

I have seen the movies and may have had a few toys as a child but as an adult I just don't like it. I like Science Fiction, I like Fantasy. Am I just missing something? I saw all the Force Friday stuff and I was like meh, I see the trailers/teasers for the new film and I am meh. I should like it but I don't. I don't even find the MMO appealing.

I've never been much of a fan either. The first one came out when I was sixteen and I never bothered to see it because the trailers looked so ugly. A friend dragged me to see Empire Strikes Back and I liked it okay, so I got a tape of A New Hope-- nope, didn't like it. The main reasons were that the aesthetics were so horrible and I didn't care for either Mark Hamill or Carrie Fisher (although I loved Harrison Ford and Alec Guinness). That's why I liked the OT better: A more appealing cast and a better aesthetic, especially in the first one.

Still, I've come to enjoy it in a vague way and I'm looking forward to The Force Awakens-- ironically to see what the original characters are up to.

It seems like Star Wars is loved by so many people and they get hyped about it and I just don't care. I remember a few times when I was younger(late teens/early 20's) and people showing me all their SW stuff and I wasn't interested at all. Then the past few years everyone on social media and entertainment shows I watch talk about it and I feel like maybe I am missing something because it doesn't excite me at all. Aesthetically I never really cared for it also.

IMO it's basically a kids' Saturday matinee film with a lot of money thrown at it. I was in my 20s when I first saw Star Wars and always regarded and enjoyed it as such. I'm also looking forward to seeing what JJ makes of the franchise. You might prefer The Hidden Fortress.

Episodes IV-VI are for the most part better than Episodes I-III.

Lucas isn't the greatest writer in the world at I think it shows, Episodes I-III could have been improved by someone else giving a polish to his script.

Episodes II-III start to overuse CGI.

Yes I know what the marketing people at Disney did yesterday and it is an engrained part of popular culture.

I suggest you do what I do when it comes to things I am not interested in, say football or parents declaring that their children have gone to school or moved up a year or somesuch and just ignore it.

The OT doesn't stand up well to repeat viewing in my opinion, "Empire" being the best of the bunch. The original Star Wars is clunky and plodding. Seeing the story behind it makes me forgive some of its flaws, because it really is a miracle that it even got made, and it nearly gave George Lucas a heart attack in the process. But even with flaws forgiven, it's hardly a masterpiece.

ESB is a much better film. I don't know if it's because of the bigger budget, different director, deeper story, all the above...but it's clearly superior. ROTJ, every time I watch it, seems to be something that flirts with greatness but falls short.

I think the biggest draw with Star Wars in the richness of the universe and mythology built up around it. It's such a fun galaxy to think about and play around in.

Like "Rocky," no one can quite explain why the original was so popular at the time of its release. There are a million different reasons. No one expected it. It just...happened. And you can't separate "Star Wars the cultural phenomenon" from "Star Wars" anymore. They are intertwined. It changed entertainment forever but I don't think it's ever been great cinema. Just a fun fantasy world.

What is wrong with Society?

Grown men everywhere wearing Star Wars t shirts, buying Star Wars toys on "Force Friday"...

What is "Star Wars"??-- it's 12 hours of movie. I would argue there is more bad "Star Wars" than good.

It's weird to me that people are so obsessed and buy so much merchandise over simple movies that really, honestly, have shallow characters and a story of very little depth. Where the same story elements are told over and over.

Star Wars is not about the movies- theyre about hope.

Hope that each new film will fill some kind of need for excitement; of capturing a feeling people felt in 1977, or 1980- that adults yearn for again. That they have lost with the realities Adulthood has shown them. They're just movies, like Deuce Bigelow Male Gigolo is only a movie.

People who force their kids to watch the films and want their little minds to be blown too. Parents who buy their kids the toys and ram the whole thing down their throats because they now view Star Wars as a generational thing.

You ask if you're missing something. No! You're not. It sounds like you like your SF with a little more substance. You'll probably go see "The Force Awakens" and move on.

That's healthy. It's just a movie. Society have worked themselves into such a tizzy over the films, with a lot of help of the marketing savvy of Lucasfilm, Disney, 20thcentury Fox--It's become this animal that you feel like you should be "into"---but it's just as cool not being a sheep for Star Wars.

For me, the only really good SW movie is ESB. And I can't even be bothered to watch all the animated stuff. The one thing that I did really get into for a long time was the expanded universe in the novels, because it really is a huge, fun universe. But even then, it's not all that and a bag of chips. I haven't even read a new one in over a decade.

Also, the fact that you (the OP) can't get interested in the trailers isn't at all surprising. So far, they're playing almost 100% to OT nostalgia, which is great for huge fans and terrible for people who didn't actually think the OT was great. I'm honestly interested in seeing what they do with the new movie, but I can't get at all excited about the trailers, either.
