I don't like how Abrams approached this... *spoilers*

Joe40001,

I have a better word for you: gutless.

[..]

You want something new? Blow it up. Earth First. Disease, war, hostile first contact, whatever. But then move ahead another 5 centuries and show us what happens /after/ when the scattered remnants of humanity at least have developed an internally consistent (i.e. Like TOS, individualized) social order and we are the intruders on their lives.
Oh my. You seem like a troubled man; I mean, what exactly do you dislike about this movie so much?

Besides, do you really want to see a dark and bleak future? This is one of the first movies in a long time to have an optimistic view of the future. That's what makes it so special.

I guess you could say that.

In poll in this forum, 87% of voters rated it above average or excellent. I would assume people in this forum are more than casual fans...

I thought so before. I don't know. I must be a purist because I expected a far more negative response from the posters. Oh well everyone is entitled to their opinion, and there is no accounting for taste. :)

That means only 13% of the TrekBBS viewers are PURE fans.

There was far more to this film than BANG! WHOOSH! BOOM!

I say action and "KABOOM" are part of real life. Some of the greatest movies of all time have lots of boom. The mistake Hollywood has made in years past is to fill a film with BOOM and think---there ya go! Abrams doesn't do that!

Saving Private Ryan--Band of Brothers-----Alfred Hitchcock films---Matlock----Walker---okay nevermind.

Abram's Star Trek dealt with real-life issues like---childbirth, family, a mother's love, fatherhood, courage, faith and suffering--all of these issues were covered in the new movie and they are not stupid issues at all. The movie was not just KABOOM! The movie was more than neato explosions. People like this movie because it was far more than mindless booms---it was about what it's like to be human.

It was more like this: KABOOM! MOTHER'S LOVE! CHILDBIRTH! BOOM! KABOOM! TIME TRAVEL! WHOOOSH! FATHER ISSUES! BOOM! OVERCOMING FEAR! KABOOM! LOVE! WHOOSH! KABOOM! FIZZLE! SHIZZLE! BOOM! FRIENDSHIP! FUN! whoooOOOOOOOSSHHH!

True enough. Every time I feel overwhelmed by the resounding critical praise this movie gets, I just pull out my Nemesis DVD with the big "Thumbs up" rating from Richard Roeper printed right on the front.;)

But even as a standalone film I think it was mediocre at best. It felt rushed and sloppy. I went in with an open mind and came out with a disappointed mind.

Agreed. I thought that Kirk's entire life from childhood to graduation felt pretty rushed. While I saw the events surrounding his ascendency to the rank of captain, I didn't really get into his head as a character. That's one of the ways in which this movie really falls down compared to the other 2 prequel/reboots that everyone is comparing it to, Batman Begins & Casino Royale. I felt that Batman Begins really did a good job of getting into Bruce Wayne as a character and explained not only the mechanics but also the emotional arc that someone would have to take to go from being an angry young man with a gun to becoming an elaborate costumed vigilante. And while I wouldn't say James Bond's character development in Casino Royale was exceptionally deep, I think that his romance with Vesper Lynd resonated far better than the Kirk/Spock or Spock/Amanda relationships in Star Trek.

I saw it a second time and it holds up beyond the explosions. The pace is easier to take aswell. I think its what Star Trek badly needed tbh. I saw Nemesis last night and I have to say, any film which has Janeway in it automatically fails. That was the problem with Star Trek, it had become burdened with boring characters and what had become a very dull style, with everyone being "perfect" and following rules of procedure. This film brings back "fun" to Star Trek, fun which hasn't been seen since TOS. Now I want to see some greater depth in the next film, I don't want it to be cardboard cut outs and a dumbed down storyline but this film for what its worth, served its purpose well and added something new to the trek canon, a thrill a minute action movie. The biggest mistake if they are to make a new trek movie would be to make a mickey mouse production. Example ST IV was a major success, they followed it up with a low budget shoddy film (that said IV was cheesy and lame imo). First Contact was a mega success but again they followed it up with a lower budget small film. What they need to do is follow this one up with a script which really expands on this new universe, something really good and incorporate even better special effects. The same budget would be fine, as long as they don't get lazy.

If a man steals a brand name like Coke or Nike or Lambourghini someone will take notice quickly and he will be a lot poorer by week's end.

If someone takes a storyline called Star Trek and trashes the original characters it's call 'reinventing the franchise'.

And it's gutless because Abrams couldn't redo from his own material, he had to steal character personalities and all the rest while somehow seeking to legitimize it by linkage to the old story.
Did you miss the part when he was asked by the people owning the franchise? I ain't see no stealing.

And while I care not a whisker about how Nimoy goes out, I would have liked to have seen _THE FEDERATION_ on trial. As a force of socialist-conformist idiots who finally run into something they just can't sophist philosophize around with a phaser in their back pocket just in case.
Emphasis mine. Tell me again... why you like Star Trek?

You want apocalypse? SHOW IT. Don't slime it under the door.

I swear, I watch the 'everyone is safe so long as they are PC and dress like good little Nazis in Red Jumpsuits' and I wanna puke. Because Star Trek has traditionally had one of the lamest evoked societal backgrounds possible and now they are going into this 21st Century ideal of 'modern issues' with the attitude of an Inquisition.
Again... why you like Star Trek?

As is, all I see is a talentless moron trashing cars as aesthetic class and Vulcans as plot logic. And it makes me sad to see the cheering mob go for it simply so that they can say 'this is OUR Star Trek, not yours...'
Actually, from what you just wrote, I had my doubts it was ever your Star Trek... :wtf:

Yet right you gutless worms.
