I Am Suspected Of Shoplifting. You're KIDDING?!

Talk to her manager, both to clarify policy and to clarify that she actually is speaking for someone as opposed to screwing around with you.

Until you have evidence that she isn't acting alone, I'm going to assume that she is.

OR... carry on wearing a backpack and carry on shopping there. You've done nothing wrong so why should you have to change your habbits? If it becomes store policy, then fine, but at the minute it's border line discrimination.

Discrimination on what basis? Perhaps its because he's a regular customer so, if he is stealing, it's more likely to cost them money compared to an infrequent customer.

It's their store and they feel uncomfortable. That's why he has to change his habits if he wants to go there.

If it's only one member of staff who you have interacted about this then I would get it confirmed one way or another. If they have a policy ask them to put up sufficiently big signs. If they don't have a policy ask them why you are being singled out. But I would remember if you burn your bridges then you can't go back and if you've been shopping there 3 times a week for 8 years, consider the inconvenience you're making for yourself. They have the right to bar you from using their store. You have no right to shop there.

I think AJ meant "if he were stealing". The subjunctive; never forget its power.

Yeah, more or less. My point is, from their perspective, it might make sense to treat the two situations differently. I know he isn't stealing, but that isn't the point since I don't run that particular supermarket.

Or you could just not wear a backpack in this specific supermarket.

Would you ask the same of a female customer in regards to her purse? Same basic bit of equipment: a device designed to hold things. If they have no posted "rule" regarding backpacks, then he shouldn't have to set it aside.

Another twist in the tale:

Well, I informed my father of the incident. He told me he would go in and have a look around for signage.

Well, he went in. And then some... *groan*

I got a call while I was at work from him, telling me he was with one of the managers at the Supermarket (what?) and that it had been sorted (WHAT?!). They wanted my address so they could send me a letter and to let me know the girl had been reprimanded.

I really didn't need him to do this. I mean, really. I'm big enough and old enough to fight these battles myself. Apparently he went into the shop 3 times. The first, with a pen and paper taking notes. The second time, he went in with a backpack. The third time he went in, asked for the manager and claimed he was there "representing someone". Good grief. There was an issue with me going in there "several times a day." Several times a day? Nonsense! Apparently the manager had tried to intercept me about putting my bag at the front window. This requirement is specific to me, not store policy.

So, fuck this. I have far more important things to concern myself with at the moment. I think I'm done with this embarrassing mess. I don't even want a letter.

I wouldn't ask anything, but it's not my supermarket. If the supermarket did make that request, then, yes, I would suggest that a woman not carry her purse. It would completely kill business, though, since women's clothing generally isn't as capable of carrying a wallet outside of a purse, so those people literally couldn't shop. I would submit that women are accused of shoplifting more than men, however.

Although, based on the new info, it seems possible that the woman in question wasn't authorized to make such a statement (or, at least, the supermarket wasn't anticipating a backlash). My statements would only apply if the supermarket did in fact make the request.

The best part of this story is how how you could have spoken with the manager yourself and cleared this up rather easily, but chose not to.

This is like Monty Python's Flying Circus Of How To Lose Your Customers or something. I worked in retail and only time I ever accused anyone of stealing was when I actually saw them steal.

^Hey. It's great to know he cares ...

I had every intention of taking this up with management. I merely spent some extra time determining how I was going to go about it. LOL - moot point now.

My flatmate (funnily enough - a supermarket manager) has said the same. He confronts customers all the time, but it's only after he or another staff member have caught them in the act - and security have always been informed prior to the customer being accosted.

Anyway. If this were an episode of family Guy, what would Peter do?

I don't know, but scene would end with im hurting his knee and sit down grabbing it and pain and going: "AAAAAHHHH!*inhale*AAAAAAHHHH!*inhale*" for ten minutes.

Agreed. Or just dropped it if it wasn't a huge deal. I have this general strategy about a variety of situations. First, try to shrug it off. If it's a big deal and you really can't let it go, it's better to be honest about that. Do something constructive to resolve the situation. If it isn't a big deal, you drop it and don't go around complaining about it.
